Movie Review: I Downloaded a Ghost

Melanie Dee
I love fun children movies that involve friendly scares.

When I first came across the movie I Downloaded a Ghost, I added it to my Blockbuster Online Que. The movie arrived a few days later. I was happy to pop the DVD in to see what this cutesy kid ghost flick had to offer.

To my surprise it offered me one of my favorite actresses; Ellen Page (who's recently starred in Juno).

The movies started off pretty promising. Ellen Page plays Stella, a new girl who has just moved into a new town/new school. Stella loves anything supernatural. She digs learning about ghosts, and playing practical jokes to scare people.

Stella has entered into the Haunted House Competition, with Halloween only a few days away, she is in a rush to get her haunted house ready. It seems like a sure win, but she's up against the most popular girl in school, who's father is conveniently the school principal, and conveniently very rich. He is able to provide his daughter with money to buy special effects and props for her haunted house.

While browsing the internet to read up on ghosts, Stella comes across a website, and on the website she somehow manages to download a ghost.

Near immediately a man who was recently framed for robbery, (had been hit by a bus)...becomes Stella's downloaded ghost.

Stella decides to take this opportunity to cash out on winning the Haunted House Competition. The ghost though needs Stella's help in order to cross over. He has till midnight on Halloween to fix a wrong (him being framed). Stella though wants no part of it. She wants to use him as her main attraction for her haunted house, and does not care about him.

However he proves to be a very annoying spirit, and eventually Stella promises to help, so long as he leaves her alone; and of course helps her win the haunted house competition.

The rest of the movie is basically a cat and mouse chase between the good guys and the bad guys, with a twist at the end of just who the bad guys are.

Overall:

It was a cute movie for me. Some of the actors were a bit over-acting, and others did a great job at portraying their characters. All in all, I Downloaded a Ghost was a very cute movie made for children. There is nothing overly frightening in the flick, so I can easily recommend it to very young children.

I'd give it a 4 out of 5 stars.
