Movie Review: Funny Games

Jason Ward
Many have not heard of Michael Haneke's 1997 German film Funny Games, I myself thought that it was mesmerizing and terrible at the same time, so when I read that he was making a remake with Naimo Watts and Tim Roth as the leads and Michael Pitt as one of the villians I knew I had to watch it.

This movie wasn't released nationwide due to the content matter so after searching through a couple cinemas playing such garbage as Meet the Spartans and 10,000 B.C I finally found it playing at a small arthouse cinema downtown, I was captivated by the entire spectrum before my eyes, the cruelty and utter lack of compassion portraid by the villains was almost too much to watch sometimes, but never once did my eyes leave the screen, yes alot of the violence was off screen but I still felt sick almost the entire movie, being pretty proud about my strong stomach for horror movies and blood I was fascinated how Haneke was able to pull it off. A very masterfull filmaker who used to be in Opera, toys with our emotions the whole movie and shows us how sick we really are for sitting through and even enjoying so called entertainment. All the actors shine and you can feel the couple's (Tim Roth and Naimo Watts) pain and hurt the entire movie long, and as for Michael Pitt and Brady Corbet, Evil would be the understatement of a life time, making such villains as Hannibal and Freddy Krueger look like a couple of playdolls, they portray a hopeless evil that you know will triumph at the end, and so you are left at about half way into the film knowing the fate of this poor family and yet you can do nothing to help them.

Look for this gem of a movie before it leaves cinemas, If you wanna see the type of messed up world we live in, this movie is an eye opener..

Happy watchings.....

Anna(Naimo Watts): Why don't you just kill us?
Peter(Brady Corbet):You shouldn't forget the importance of entertainment.

I love writing and I'll do a review on pretty much anything if it sparks my interest.  View profile

Excellent review! It is a very disturbing movie, and Michael Haneke is proving to be a top director in the world of suspense. It's hard movie to recommend to many, but it is worth seeing for those who think they can stomach it.
