Movie Review: Heroic Trio

Three Superwomen in a Hong Kong Action SciFi Flick

Maggie Taylor-Mount
Someone is stealing baby boys from the nursery of the local hospital. Tung/Wonder Woman, played by Anita Mui (Jet Li's The Enforcer, The Legend of Drunken Master) responds to the scene chasing the kidnapper up walls in death defying stunts. Chat/Thief Catcher, played by Maggie Cheung (Jackie Chan's Police Story), sees a way to earn some money returning the stolen babes. The kidnapper, Ching/Invisible Woman, is played by Malaysian superstar Michelle Yeoh (Tomorrow Never Dies, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon).

Like many Hong Kong action movies, the plot of Heroic Trio is loosely put together and not always convincing but who watches for the plot? The three superheros showcase their kung fu abilities with humor as they look for the mastermind behind the baby kidnappings. The Evil Master believes that by kidnapping the baby boys, he can build a demonic army and rule China.

As thin as the plot of the Heroic Trio is, the action of the three amazing actresses and the cartoonish fun make this film a cult classic. Although Hong Kong action movies have long used both male and female actors as the hero, Heroic Trio is a rare film where the heroes are all women. This reason alone is enough to recommend the film to action buffs looking for a different flick to add to the collection.

Originally in Cantonese, the release of Heroic Trio in 2005 offers a movie in DVD format that is dubbed rather than using subtitles.

Heroic Trio is available for purchase from Amazon, Buy.com, and Frys on DVD.
