Movie Review of “Hunt to Kill”

Since my oldest daughter had ice skating and, as a result of that, it was getting to be a bit late, I wasn't really planning on watching a movie last night. However, my wife mentioned she was in the mood for a good action flick so, while she was getting into her pajamas, I searched through the movies available via Netflix instant streaming and, after rejecting a few that just didn't seem to be what we were looking for, ended up settling for the 2010 Steve Austin movie "Hunt to Kill."

To be honest with you, I really wasn't expecting too much from this film. I've seen plenty of others that starred former (or current) professional wrestlers and, with very few exceptions, always thought the plots were a bit too simple. And, to tell you the truth, that was pretty much the case with this one too. However, unlike the other movies, I actually did enjoy this one.

Austin stars as a border patrol agent who is forced to help a group of crooks track down one of their own in the Montana wilderness because they have taken his daughter hostage.

What I liked about this movie is, even though Austin's character should have the obvious advantage, both from his vast survival knowledge and the fact he knows the territory, the bad guys actually do a good job keeping a couple steps ahead of him throughout. Every time you think he's finally gaining the upper hand, they manage to pull out another surprise and keep him in his place and even his own daughter starts to turn against him out of frustration.

As a result of that, even though the movie did get to be somewhat predictable at times (and occasionally reminded me of something I saw in a Rambo movie once), I was pretty much able to overlook that because I never knew if there would be some other twist thrown in at the last second.

I still don't consider this the best action film I've ever seen, or even the best action movie starring a professional wrestler. But, if you are looking for a movie that will keep you interested and entertained, I do recommend watching this one if you haven't seen it already.

My grade: 3 stars out of a possible 5.
