Movie Review: McClintock

Jim Johnson
John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara star in this, a first of its kind: the comedic western. Loosely based on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew', cattle baron George Washington McClintock lives the life of an old West bachelor, apart from his estranged wife, Katherine, who left him years ago due to a suspicion of adultery, according to Wikipedia. His life is complicated when a widow named Louise Warren (Yvonne DeCarlo-The Munsters) comes into his life through her oldest son, Devlin (Patrick Wayne), and her daughter Alice (Aissa Wayne).

The most noted scenes were, not only the two spanking scenes in this movie, but also the clay-slide scene in which settlers from the eastern US attempted to settle a region of the Western US called The Mesa Verde. The spanking scenes not only involved GW and Katherine, but Devlin Warren and the McClintock's seventeen year old daughter Rebecca (Stephanie Powers-Hart to Hart).

The clay-slide scene depicted a large brawl between McClintock's miners, and cattlemen; versus the men from the settler's encampment, in which a suspected kidnapping took place, allegedly by the local Comanche tribe-a situation stirred up by the local US land office agent Matthew Douglas.

Another notable scene in which the McClintock Fourth of July celebration offered a little more comedy and action while the celebration commenced with crazy horse races, firecrackers going off, and even a creative tug 'o war, a little jail break takes place that frees the Chiefs of the Comanche tribe.

All in all, this is a fun-filled movie in which the whole family can enjoy-whether you're a fan of the Western or not. It offers all the elements of entertainment: comedy, drama, action, adventure, and even a little generational ribbing which makes this movie a delight to view. I highly recommend this movie purely for the style of action and comedy films like this were made.
