Movie Review: No Country for Old Men

Kay
No Country For Old Men starts with our introduction to Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) who is hunting somewhere out in West Texas. He finds some trucks parked out in the middle of nowhere, and with them some dead bodies, drugs, and a suitcase full of money. He takes the suitcase full of money, and that event changes his life forever.

Llewelyn figures out that several different individuals are looking for that suitcase, and the man that took it. So he sends his wife away, and he takes off on the road to try, and get as far away from the situation as possible. The only problem is that death is looking for him, and he's not going to stop until he kills Llewelyn, and gets the money back. Death in this instance is in the form of a man, Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem) who is a hit man/grim reaper who will stop at nothing to get the money back even if it means he has to kill everyone who comes in contact with Llewelyn, and even some who don't.

We also have a sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) who is one step behind the chaos, but is determined to get to the bottom of the situation, and help Llewelyn get himself out of a bad situation. All these events come to a head, as the movie heads towards it's inevitable ending where only one solution to the events is possible for some of our characters.

I'm a little late in seeing this movie, but I'm sure glad I finally got to see it in the theaters. The acting in this movie is superb with Josh Brolin giving the best performance of his career as Llewelyn Moss. He's just a small town guy, but when trouble comes his way he fights back the best way he knows how, and I loved how Brolin brought the character to life.

Javier Bardem gives one chilling performance as Anton Chigurh a man who has principles however twisted they might be, and is not afraid to kill anyone that gets in his way. I can see how he won for best supporting actor because his portrayal of the cold bloody killer is just fantastic. The rest of the cast is terrific as well with Tommy Lee Jones, and Woody Harrelson giving great supporting performances.

I'm not a big Coen brother's fan, but they hit this movie out of the park. The scenery in this film is just beautiful, and the action scenes are filmed with such beauty even if they are violent in nature. They gave us a film that's wonderfully written, and directed, and they deserved the Oscar they received.

Overall I felt this film was just terrific with great performances, great directing, and it's just a great movie. I know some people had problems with it's ending, and I can see where they're coming from, but I just found the whole movie to be fantastic, and an instant classic.

I highly recommend.

I lived most of my life in a small town in the Coal Region in Pa. I spent a year traveling the country with my wife, and now we've settled (For Now) in Gilbert, AZ.  View profile

My pick for the best film of 2007. I'm glad it snagged the Best Picture Oscar. Great review! Better late than never.
