The Sarah Silverman show is just what it sounds like a show starring Sarah Silverman with each show being some dim witted theme with her friends talking current social affairs. The show seems to be wanting to make a statement about poking fun at being politically correct using Sarah's foul language and really stupid sit com.
The first episode shows what I mean by Sarah and her friend Brian getting high and solving the crime of the times as a company sells potato chips that give you diarrhea and that sells diarrhea medicine and toilet paper. The company has been under investigation into missing dogs in the community and the company is using its sales of photo copiers and telephone poles to make a killing on the missing dogs.
Not exactly the smartest plot line and about the only real message I could see is don't do drugs and you won't go around kidnapping company presidents because you have no clue what you're doing. The show continues with dumb messages that attempt to poke fun at issues like race, crime, drugs, gay couples and more but mostly its seriously not funny.
It actually looks to me that someone tossed money to Sarah and friends to put on a show and they did their best with whatever was at hand and plenty of money. There does not seem to be any decent writers who are putting out any kind of funny lines or worthwhile plot but the problems do not end there.
There also does not seem to be anyone overseeing the show during filming as most of the show looks more like a Saturday Night Live filming, but not in a good way. The actors are easily missing the lines and not doing a good job of giving any kind of convincing job of acting, it actually looks like something you would see from high school age kids.
The show just does not make me laugh and the actors seem for the most part to be reading lines as they are filming and not really putting much effort into acting their lines. I truly did not like watching this show not because I don't like the attempt at politically correct jabs or the varied look at these controversial topics but the general acting was not very good at all.
The topics were fine and if you approach things correctly all the various topics and trying to bring even the idea of political correctness to the forefront of awareness works but not here. The Sarah Silverman show looks more like a cheap job at a cable series with whoever was handy instead of actors who could at least give a decent line or work well at their chosen field.
I think this show will not last and will only have a small following but there is another reason I don't like this release and it has nothing to do with Sarah. What is with releasing half a season and still charging what you would expect to for a full season?
This volume one and volume two stuff does not bode well for the future of cable and television series as it seems like they are trying to nickel and dime customers into purchasing less for more. If you want people to buy your product don't offer half a product, especially half a season of a show.
Technically the show is fine in both video and audio with video in standard definition and audio in Dolby Digital without any problems at all. Video looks good and audio is clear and front speaker heavy as you would imagine for a partial season of a show that technically worked.
The extra content on the DVD edition for Season 2 Volume 2 has a lot of bonus content mostly in audio commentary on both discs. There is also a few behind the scenes and animated features but if you don't like the show the extra stuff is pretty self serving and not worth it.
The Sarah Silverman Program is not really all that funny and the jokes just do not work well but the main thing I was disappointed with was the lack of acting ability. The actors, including Sarah herself, seem to be reading their lines and not really doing much to convince us that they actually mean any of it in any way.
This show uses a lot of jokes heavy on the bodily functions type humor and other things like trying to poke fun at political correctness but mostly it just falls flat. I just cannot recommend the Sarah Silverman Program for anyone unless you have seen a show and like what you see before spending money on more.
