Movie Review: The Secret

Have You Seen This Thing?

If you haven't heard of "The Secret," well, you have now. The Secret is a movie available for sale online that has changed the way many people think, and changes the mindset of those who watch it.

The concept of the movie is the law of attraction- that people end up with the lives, people, situations, etc., which they have attracted to themselves. It is punctuated by several quotes from famous successful people who seemed to know all about this and used it to their advantage. Thomas Edison, Mother Teresa, et al., seemed to know that achieving something begins with picturing it in your mind. Picturing the same thing over and over brings it about, according to the movie, and you can do it with anything- money, a car, marriage, publication, tarantulas- anything out there that you really want. Picturing having it is not quite enough, however. You need to feel the emotion you expect to feel upon receiving the item. Using the emotion and the imagery together, you can get whatever it is, according to the movie.

What about all of the horrible crap that we have to deal with? That's our own fault, according to the movie. The more we dwell on negative things, the more negative things we draw toward ourselves. Thinking about all of the examples presented in the movie, it does make sense. The endless war on drugs focuses people's energies on drugs, so we get more drugs. Anti-war rallies do the same thing for war, and what do we get? Exactly.

There were also interviews with several successful people who used the law of attraction to do things that didn't seem possible at the time. The Chicken Soup for the Soul book series creator describes in detail how his success came about after he continually visualized exactly where his success would take him, and even the dollar amounts that he wanted and eventually got. The power of thought was also used by a plane crash survivor who healed from injuries that were thought to be impossible to recover from.

The movie unfolds through scenes of attraction, thought power, and interviews, and by the end, you come away convinced that your thoughts really can get you whatever you want. Is it all true? Who knows, but if it changes your mindset into a positive one and makes you ponder success, that is good enough in itself.

  • If you want a tarantula, picture the tarantula over and over, imagine yourself petting it and feeding it crickets.
