The irony of the situation as the man who runs over a baby with a car, thinking it is a real baby, calls the person who changed the real baby for the robot baby a sick person. It is a sick person doing sick things who is calling another person sick. The Shoot Em Up movie is an action comedy full with barrels of bullets & laughter. It all started when Smith (Clive Owen) was enjoying his drink by the side of the road, sitting on a bench, waiting for a bus or whatever. A pregnant lady ran past in front of him & it did not budge him much until a car came menacingly into the scene with the driver shouts threats at her.
Smith (Clive Owen) took insults from the aggressive man by his stride at first, but when he displayed a pistol, to shoot the lady, the hero made his move & that was the movie started. Yes, I know, it is a blunt beginning like any man on the street can be a hero. Well, anyway, it's totally fictional; a one man against an army of well armed goons & hitmans. The hero's sharp shooting prowess is from the realms of fantasy world. It is unclear & viewers are left questioning how Smith just so happened to be in the area in the beginning of the Shoot Em Up movie. I suspect Smith is a one man assault team working for the U.S. secret service.
Even though he may have been trained by the SBS, SAS, SEALS, Spetnaz or whatever, the Shoot Em Up movie is a pure, fast paced, gun totting, & explosive action film not to be interpreted as reality. Why, because much of the shooting action just does not make any sense & seem absurd on occasions. Well, not as absurd as dodging bullets in Matrix movies but is absurd enough to be unrealistic. Smith also always knows when, how & where to move to avoid sprayed bullets from automatic guns! Even the title best expresses the movie, firefights & action first; storyline is secondary. I mean there are so many men going after one particular baby that the Shoot Em Up movie is outright hilarious!
Particularly interesting is the firefight scene on the top of the building, roughly just after the beginning of the movie. There is an alphabetical lighted billboard & Smith (Clive Owen) shot them until the alphabets spells "Fuk U Too". Additionally he gives his sly remark "Fuk You, You fuking Fukers" to the bunch of bad guys going after him & the baby. Note that the evil leader, Hertz (Paul Giamatti) & a few of his honchos have fancy side arms with a state of the art bio metric thumb identification system that allows only the owner to fire the gun. In one scene, Smith uses one of the chopped hands of his assailants to fire the gun because of the device in the Shoot Em Up movie. Talk about improvising!
The fictional nature of the Shoot Em Up movie had been declared early. Therefore the induced barbarism like bursting brains, eye gauging, chopped hands & etc only served as entertainingly humorous. Surprisingly they came into effect without the added horror of it ever though to happen in real life. Wicked! By the way, Monica Belluci looks as tight as ever, especially in the sex scene where Smith (Clive Owen) battles armed intruders exceptionally while still performing sexual intercourse with her.
An extraordinary airborne firefight is inclusive in the Shoot Em Up movie especially for the action movie fanatics. It is by far the best aerial shooting scenes that I have seen in movies. Strarscream in the recent Transformers movie is the 2nd best. Anyway, the leader of the bad guys, Hertz played by Paul Giamatti is a convincing psycho. He usually acts in a comedy role & the psycho killer character is inevitably infused with his mainstream repertoire. He is still laughable in every aspect & yet is a well composed wise nut & a ruthless gun toting madman hell bent on killing the baby.
