What was interesting about this movie was not so much about the creature but the human interactions. There was many times you would see foreshadowing of what might the creatures do or what the people will do. To me the lady who ran the show, Mrs. Carmody, the religious nutcase, played by Marcia Gay Harden, showed just how dangerous religion can be when humans are left with nothing but the possiblity of death or salvation. While she gave some hope she gave others a very difficult time and that is putting it lightly. She was an extremely good villian that you at the end would love to hate.
Another that was very much a villian or anti-hero was Andre Braugher as Norton. Tho a good man he was very much a pain. He was the law man or scientific mind that would not believe until it was too late. Again another human possiblity in the face of adversity.
We can not forget the goverment's hand in this movie as well. Well played out by a few military MPs that something up in the mountain got out of hand and they stayed quiet about it even at the expense of helpless men, women and children. I will not tell the whole story because you will hate me if I do. But I will say it gave a true feeling of Area 51.
But even tho the hero and heroine of this movie, played by Thomas Jane who played David Drayton the local artist and Laurie Holden who played a school teacher did very well fighting on the other side and trying to keep sane. Except they made a horrible mistake in the end which is why I tell you unless you really want to see the ending of this movie, leave just after the largest creature passes over the car. If you stay longer you might hate this movie which of course is always up to you.
I would give this movie 3 stars out of 4 before the creature and 2 stars if you stay to the end.
