Movie Review: Superbad

As an escape to my general reality, I watch a lot of movies. Some good, some not-so-good. Every now and again, I come across a movie that falls into a third category that has no name. I don't want to watch it because it looks stupid. I don't want to turn away from it because the scene looks strangely reminiscent of something. Something about the movie draws me in slowly and before I know it, I'm laughing hysterically. Superbad, starring Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, falls into this category. It's about three teenage boys that are about to graduate high school and their sole purpose in life is to get laid. Yeah, they may want to graduate, get into college, etc. But, all of that takes a backseat to the potential of losing their virginity to a real live girl.

While watching Superbad, I couldn't help but to think about all of the "scenarios" I found myself involved with in the pursuit of a girl. This movie had elements of them all. The scenes may have been crazy, hilarious, and unlikely, but they weren't too far away from some of the things I have seen or done. It typifies the extremes young men will go through as they seek out the mysteries of love, lust and the never-ending pursuit of a good party. After watching the movie, I called one of my oldest and dearest friends and asked him if we were really that bad back in the day. His response gave clarity to why this movie is a classic. After a short pause and a slight chuckle, he said, "Not only were we bad, my friend. We were super bad!"
