Movies that Feature Thor, the Hammer-Wielding God and Warrior

For many generations of comic book fans, the hammer-wielding God and warrior Thor has become a popular character in the Marvel universe. He is also one of the Nordic Gods who has often been referenced, whether directly or indirectly, in a variety of literary and cinematic works. While his stories slightly vary in the many depictions of him, his primary character background remains the same -- he is said to be the iconic God of Thunder and the son of Odin, the ruling God of Asgard.

"Thor"

Thor's pop culture appeal peaked with the release of the Paramount Picture blockbuster hit "Thor" starring Chris Hemsworth in the title role. This film tells the story of the young and arrogant warrior god exiled from the mystical realm of Asgard to the Earth. The mighty Thor finds himself living among humans. From there, he soon learns what it takes to become a true king.

"The Avengers"

The iconic figure "Thor" is also set to appear in another blockbuster movie "The Avengers." It features a team of superheroes and saviors of the world including Nick Fury, Tony Stark/Iron Man, Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Bruce Banner/The Hulk, and Clint Barton/Hawkeye. As Thor joins the team of the world's finest defenders, he once again meets his evil brother Loki.

"Thor: Tales of Asgard"

The popularity of "Thor" sparked interest in another Thor movie, just about two weeks after its theatrical showing. The animated feature "Thor: Tales of Asgard" is a video release with a nearly identical plot to the blockbuster movie. Clearly capitalizing on the cashcow potential of the initial "Thor" film, it explores the story of the young Thor heading off to the Frost Giants' realm. However, instead of his father Odin sending him to Earth, he leaves Thor and his fellow Asgard warriors in Jotunheim where they are pursued by the Frost Giants.

"Almighty Thor"

Known for its low-budget and usually direct-to-video productions, the film studio and distributor The Asylum capitalized in the popularity of "Thor" by making the mockbuster "Almighty Thor." Aptly released on DVD about the same time as "Thor," it depicts the story of the demon god Loki destroying the fortress of Valhalla, a place where valkyries lead half of those who died in combat into this majestic Asgard hall. He also steals the Hammer of Invicibility and only the young Thor can help save the world and prevent the Ragnarok to happen.

"Thor at the Bus Stop"

The 2009 comedy "Thor at the Bus Stop" used the Norse God of Lighting Thor as its main character. Here, Thor journeys through a suburban neighborhood on the day he is set to die as the world's savior. However, nobody seems to care about it. Shown in several film festivals, this independent feature adapts Thor's mythological character to create a comic story set in a modern town.

"Legends of Valhalla: Thor"

Another 2011 Thor movie releases, this time, in Iceland, one of the Nordic countries. "Legends of Valhalla: Thor" is a CGI animated comedy that explores the story of Thor, a young blacksmith living with his mother in a small, peaceful village. This overconfident teen may not be the usual warrior character, but he has a magical weapon -- a hammer that he tries to use to save his people who were brought by a Giant army to Hel, the Queen of the Underworld.
