Movies: The Next Big Thing in 2009

Ultimax
Movies are going to be next year's biggest thing. They have been for a little over a century. The first movie ever made was Roundhay Garden by French inventor, Louis Le Prince, in 1888 and was about two seconds long. If you can only image the craze back then; a moving photograph. It has been a big thing back then and it still is. There is no sign of the craze stopping.

In 2007, movies brought in over $500 million dollars (this is not a big number when it comes to movies). That is only from theaters. That isn't including merchandising and Internet ratings based off of those movies. Movies make a lot of movies for themselves and for anything connecting with it (television, radio, advertisement companies, theaters, cities, concessions, etc.).

Here are some major contributors to 2007's movie money inhaul: Transformers, 300, The Great Debaters, Persepolis, The Simpsons Movie, Superbad, Harry Potter & the Order of the Phoenix, American Gangster, Sweeny Todd, The King of Kong There Will Be Blood, Hot Fuzz, Walk Hard, Michael Clayton, Ratatoullie, The Bourne Ultimatum, Juno, and No Country for Old Men. These movies, along with plenty others, where talked about on TV talk shows, Internet forums, and real life. They are what keep websites alive (up and running). The traffic websites have that has a topic on a movie is staggering; a million viewing in less than half a week. They can Google it, Yahoo it, MSN it, Myspace it, Facebook it, Black Planet it, University post it, or what have you. Movies make Internet websites a lot of money, next to theaters and television. A rating is a major issue.

In the early part of 2008 we've seen Cloverfield, Be Kind Rewind, 10,000 BC, Horton Hears a Who, Harold & Kumar 2, Iron Man, Speed Racer, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. These movies have already brought in a great deal of revenue. Some have already come out on DVD (those of course that came out earlier in the year) and are still being talked about. The ones that came out later are still of course in theaters, still racking in money every week and it has just reached the half point of the year. We still have The Happening, The Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Get Smart, The Love Guru, Wall-E, Hancock, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, The Dark Knight (are you getting excited yet? You should be), Pineapple Express, Trailer Trash, James Bond 22, Harry Potter (again) and the Half-Blood Prince, and Star Trek just to name a few. Hollywood is going to give it's viewers a wild ride for the rest of 2008 and I didn't even mention straight to DVD movies. These movies, just like the movies in 2007, are going to make a lot of money for theaters, television, and websites.

That was just two years of evidence, proof that the same is going to happen in the year 2009. The only difference is that it is going to be better. People love movies; there is no doubt about that. People would pay for a good or bad movie just out of curiosity of what is in stored from that movie. People need an escape from real life some times and movies are a great way to satisfy that urge to escape; to fill that taste of excitement; to see a couple fall in love and learn from that; to watch and release the urge to laugh; to fulfill to desire to explore the beyond; all of these things that we feel, movies are there to do all of that for us and the best thing is we get to watch (for a "small" fee).

The reason why I think movies are going to be the next best thing (and not some high-tech gadget, new dance, T.V show, book, person, place or any other thing) because they are and have been the next best thing for a long time. They make a lot of money and draw plenty of interest both of which come internationally. They make stars popular, give people jobs, inspire people, and teach life lessons. Why wouldn't they search for something like that online? They would want to know more about it. Who's in it? Who made it? What inspired it and why? How can this affect me? Most of these answers can be found on the web. That is how I found the facts for this article. Movies are ultimately going to be the next big thing in 2009, hands down.
