Movies for Summer 2011

Which Are You Looking Forward To?

Diana Flores
Now that the dull pre-summer movie season is over, the blockbusters either have or will hit the big screen soon and movie-goers everywhere are buzzing about what we'll see in theaters this summer.

The Hangover Part II
We usually don't see comedies having blockbuster potential, but The Hangover Part II proved that anything's possible. Fans showed up in theaters at the midnight showings and had several screens sold out before 10 p.m. Its first weekend grossed over 140 million in ticket sales. Kicking off the summer movie season with a bang, the Hangover Part II is a perfect 2011 summer movie.

Horrible Bosses
Now that The Hangover Part II has set up the way for comedies this summer, Horrible Bosses shows off some huge potential to be a classic with A-game comedy players such as Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis, and Jennifer Aniston. The movie revolves around three characters with impossible bosses that seem just borderline psychotic. And so they must find a way to "get rid of them". With a very relatable idea that everyone hates their bosses, this movie speaks to not only younger but older generations.

Friends With Benefits
When two friends decide to have a casual relationship, feelings and other awkward topics begin to arise. Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis star in this rom-com that is a different angle of No Strings Attached. With Mila Kunis making her big breakthrough in Black Swan, the crowds now want to see her for what she really is, the guy's girl. Natalie Portman is adorable, but there's just something about Mila Kunis that guys and girls love. Girl next door became a little too cliche, and Mila is no girl next door. She's the realistic gal pal that every guy has which is why Friends With Benefits is getting a huge buzz from guys and girls. With something in it for everyone, I doubt this movie will disappoint.

Thor
The God of Thunder is banished from his realm by his father Odin and cast down to Earth. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman star in this comic book movie that has all Marvel fans giddy and ready for action. With Anthony Hopkins as Odin, he portrays the character with fierce leadership. Chris Hemworth does perfectly portraying Thor both characteristic-wise and physically. Guaranteed to be a packed with action thrill ride, Thor is another movie that kicks off the summer movie season, being one of the first comic book movies released so far.

Green Lantern
Another super hero movie, Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds as a human chosen to defend mankind against the forces of evil. We've all seen Ryan Reynolds in comedies and chick flicks, but in his first semi-serious role, crowds are eager to see how he will portray legendary character Hal Jordan. Superhero movies are a guaranteed in action and special effects and so fans are buzzing about the classic comic book come to life.

Captain America

Turned down for combat in the armed services, short and scrawny Steve Rogers volunteers as a test subject for a military project designed to defend America and take down enemies like Johann Schmidt. Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, and Stanley Tucci, Captain America combines superheroes, World War II, and the epic voice acting of Hugo Weaving for a night at the movies that even non-comic book fans would enjoy.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon
The Autobots learn of a Cybertronian spacecraft hidden on the Moon, and race against the Decepticons to reach it and to learn its secrets. Synopsis by IMDB.com. The Transformers Trilogy comes to a peak in the newest installment featuring Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, and Tyrese Gibson.

X-Men: First Class
The next chapter in the X-Men movies is indeed the beginning of how it all started. Rewinding to the beginning to depict the stories of Charles Xavier and Eric Lensherr, audiences will meet other mutants that weren't featured in the last four movies. Starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Kevin Bacon, this movie is sure to please the die-hard X-Men fans.

Conan The Barbarian
The revamped story of Conan and his quest for vengeance against those responsible for the death of his father and the ruining of his village. Starring Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, and Rose McGowen, this movie is bound to have something for new generations and tons for older Conan the Barbarian fans.

Fright Night
The story of a teen suspecting his new neighbor to a vampire and the reason that high schoolers have gone missing. Starring Colin Farrel, David Tennant, and Anton Yelchin, Fright Night takes advantage of the vampire phenomenon that has recently swept the nation. This thriller releases in August, just at the end of summer to kick off the fall horror movie season.
