Moving: Four Tips to Make it Easier

Malcolm Tatum
As many people know, moving is no small chore. There are plenty of details to consider and tasks to complete. Even if you are moving across town, the job can seem like a project that is just this side of impossible. Fortunately, there are strategies you can use to make the move a lot smoother, and prevent the onset of a major anxiety attack in the process.

Sort and Discard

If you are like most people, the closets are jammed full of clothing and other items that never see the light of day. Instead of carting all that useless junk to your new home, take the time to sort through your storage areas and get rid of anything you don't want or need.

Set aside a weekend for this task. Begin with closets and work your way through to all the storage areas in the home. As a basic rule of thumb, if you've not used something in the last two years, it needs to go. Donate your unwanted items to charity, give them to neighbors, or have a yard sale. This one strategy will make a significant impact on how many boxes have to be packed for the move.

Use It Up

Many people make the mistake of carting along packaged foods that could easily be replaced after the move is complete. Instead of packing two dozen boxes of boxed and canned food, start consuming those items several weeks before the move takes place. You'll save a lot of money by not eating out during that time, and have more time to devote to packing other belongings that do need to make the trip.

Get Sturdy Boxes

Nothing is more frustrating than carefully packing a box, then having the bottom fall out on moving day. Eliminate the irritation and the time spent repacking collapsed boxes by securing sturdy boxes that will hold up for the duration of the move. Make sure to use strong tape to reinforce the bottoms and seal the tops of the boxes. Don't forget to label the contents before you seal each box, as this will aid in placing the boxes in the right rooms when you arrive at your destination.

Pack Now Not Later

All too often, people wait until the last minute to pack for a move. By making it a point to pack several boxes each evening for several weeks before the planned departure date, you can get a good night's sleep before the big day arrives, and feel rested and ready to tackle the project. Packing in advance also makes it much easier to take your time and make sure breakables are wrapped properly and have a better chance of arriving intact at the new place.

Using these four simple tips can make moving day much less of a headache. As a result, you'll be in a much better frame of mind throughout the move, and feel more like doing some unpacking when you get to your new home. Once the move is over, you'll be proud of how well it went, and be ready to start enjoying your new home sooner rather than later.
