Moving Out of the Dorms

Moving out of the dorms at the end of a college student's freshman year is a completely different experience than when he or she moves in the fall. There are ways to make this experience and this additional time-consuming activity that a student must complete during finals week. When students move into the dorms in the fall, their parents often accompany them and there is also a large amount of assistance available by Greek organizations, residence hall assistance and many other student organizations, yet when finals week of the spring semester begins students tend to flee campus as soon as their last final is over leaving each student on there own to move out and clean their rooms. There are many things that these students can do to make moving out of their rooms easier and less stressful.

First, a student needs to decide what day and at what time they will be leaving. Once they have decided this they can sign up for a checkout inspection time with a residents assistant. By making an appointment early a person is more likely to get a time that works for them and will also allow them to leave when they want to. Additionally, if a student starts the packing process early they will have easy access to a large supply of cardboard boxes and other student to help them move appliances and furniture. This will also lessen the amount of stuff that a student must complete in the mist of studying for finals.

Students should start the packing process by getting rid of everything that they do not want to take home with them. Most campuses setup donation sites for imperishable food and other items that students can donate to local charities instead of throwing the items away. It is also important to note that garbage rooms on upper floors of dormitory buildings close either finals week or the week before so it is easiest to get rid of anything a student wants to throw away early before they have to carry it outside to a dumpster.

After a student has moved everything out of their dorm room they must clean their room from top to bottom. In order to avoid getting charged for damage or other issues there are several things that a student should do to prevent this. First, fix anything that accumulated minor damaged during the year. Next, be sure to scrub the sink, counters and floor. It is also important to wipe down the counters, mirror, widows, blinds, beds, and light fixtures. Additionally, it is important to put all furniture back to where it was when a student checked into the room. These tips and ideas should help make the process of moving out easier.
