Moving In: Staying Organized in College from the Start

Phillip Chan
So, it's your first day on campus, and you have a truckload of stuff to move it. What do you do? Chances are, you will take a stab at organizing your stuff, but eventually leave a lot just loose around your dorm room. Why? Duh! You are in school now, and there is tons of things to do, most of them more interesting, or demanding then cleaning one's dorm room. After all, those pants aren't going anywhere, so why hang 'em up? The textbooks? They'll stay by the door, making a create doorstop, right?

Wait a minute. Let's rewind. Start over, right when you walked into your dorm room as a newbie freshman and started unpacking. Organize it. Everything. Why? It will pay off in the long run, and help make your college experience far better.

It is generally accepted that students with organized rooms also do well in school. Obviously, this may not be every college student's principle concern, but it certainly is not a bad thing. After all, when you are paying for your education, it's probably advisable to at least take a stab at some sort of success. Having an organized room, right from the get-go, and maintaining this status quo, will help immensely. Just being able to find the textbooks when you need them, without digging through three layers of clothes and video games, is a huge bonus.

Also, think about the time organized people save as opposed to the sloppy guys. Being able to find everything when you need it, and get started on projects (or video games) right away eliminates wasted 'down time' spent searching for stuff. You'll find that time in college is extremely valuable, especially if you have a busy schedule. So, move in with organization in mind, and keep that up-it'll save you a lot of time overall!

Finally, who wants to party in someone's trashed room? Who wants to hang out if your room resembles some sort of landfill? Good luck inviting the ladies over to check out your crappy place.

So, in closing, let's just try and keep at least some organization and cleanliness in our dorm rooms. It's not too hard, especially if you start from the beginning. Early action is really the key, and many people miss out on this. So, freshies (or soon to be), move in and keep everything in order. After all, who wants to live in a dump?
