Moving to Thailand; Now or Later

Garro
I remember that somebody once remarked that on every plane leaving Thailand you will find a good percentage of the passengers just don't want to go. They have had such a good time that they have decided that Thailand is the place where they would be happy to live the rest of their life. They question is whether they should make the move to Thailand as soon as possible or should they wait until they have plenty of money. In the rest of this article I will give my opinion about both options.

Moving to Thailand later in life

Moving to Thailand later in life is often the more sensible option. For most people this later date will be when they retire. Then they will have enough savings and a bit of regular income to make their move to Thailand comfortable, and if they have planned right there will no financial worries to spoil their time in the sun. For most people this will be the end of their work life and the beginning of their fun life.

This waiting certainly makes sense. In fact you will often hear ex-pats in Thailand express the view that not waiting until you have enough money behind you before moving to Thailand is reckless. If you give up your job and home to come here, and it doesn't work out this could all lead to one big mess. Thailand is a hard place for a foreigner to survive without money, and if you get sick what will you do? If you spend a few years in Thailand and then need to return home to your own country it might be hard to get back into employment at home. You should also realize that many jobs that foreigners do in Thailand have little in the way of retirement provisions. These are all reasons that make waiting a more sensible approach.

Moving to Thailand now

Without becoming too morbid, I would like to share about my experience of working as a nurse and meeting people who were told they were going to soon die. Most of these people had plans that they were waiting to fulfill and many of them regretted not having just done thing earlier. I have spent many periods in my life waiting for the next part of my life to begin, and it is now something that I try to avoid at all costs. Sometimes you just have to take a chance, and realize that even if it doesn't work out it will still be an experience. As the saying goes; ' life favors the brave'.

So long as you plan as well as you can, and don't burn any bridges at home a move to Thailand now could be a risk worth taking. It will be better than spending a lot of your life waiting for retirement to come; at least that is how I feel anyway. Of course, if you have your own family they will have to be fully involved in the choice as well.

At the end of the day the decision to move will be influenced by the factors in the individual's own life, but I hope that these comments can help in the choice to move to Thailand.
