Moving Tips to Make Moving Easier

I remember the first time I moved with my significant other. It was also the first time I literally drove him to drink. In my defense, he may have been looking for a reason anyway, but still...moving can be a very stressful time.

When you have to make a big move from one home to another, you need to try to keep it simple. Here are some tips to make your move as smooth as possible.

Gather Your Supplies - When it's time to start packing, there are several things you will need. You will want to gather sturdy boxes, packing tape, a large black marker to mark boxes and old newspapers to protect your fragile items.

Start Early - As soon as you decide that you are moving, start packing things away. There are things in the house that you don't use on a daily, or even a monthly basis. If you start packing them away as soon as possible, it will help cut down on last-minute rush jobs.

Like and Like - Keep similar household items together. Nothing will be more frustrating than going to unpack at your new location only to have to walk from room to room. By keeping the items together, you can efficiently unpack one box before moving on to the next.

Schedule a Moving Van - If you are using a moving van to move, schedule it as soon as possible. It will be very frustrating to have the big moving day arrive and have no van. You will either be scrambling to call every person you ever met who owns a truck to come to your rescue (and in doing so create life-long enemies) or you will be traveling 50 miles out of your way to get the closest available moving van.

Enlist Help - A couple weeks before moving day, think of every friend or family member that either owes you a favor or is bribable to help out on the big day and give them a call. Then, a day or two before the big move call them to remind them because chances are, they will try to "forget".

Plan Ahead - Create a game plan in advance on how you want to load and unload the moving van. Keep in mind that when you get to your moving destination, whatever you loaded first will be unloaded last. So, if your move will be anything like ours, you'll want to load the alcohol last. Better yet, just put it in the trunk of your car so it doesn't get buried. You're probably going to need it.
