Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells

Consumer Product Review

On a regular basis, I buy a wide range of food items at a small corner grocery store located near my apartment. Among the items that I regularly purchase there are various types of Mrs. Freshley's brand snack cakes. This excellent brand of snack cakes is distributed by Flowers Foods Specialty Group, from Tucker Georgia. Mrs. Freshley's products are stocked and sold at convenience stores, smaller grocers, pharmacies, supermarkets and other establishments.

A few days ago, I noticed a display filled with packages of Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells, which I had never seen before. Since I am a big fan of Mrs. Freshley's products, I purchased two packages of these chocolate snack cakes and I'm very glad that I did so.

As a matter of fact, I am eating one of these chocolate cakes as I type this article. Presented here, as a service to the consumer at large, is one food writer's product review of Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells.

Size
The net weight of the standard sized package of Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells is 3.5 ounces (99 grams). The package holds two chocolate bells, which are creme filled chocolate cakes topped with a chocolate flavored coating. Each of the cakes weighs in at 1.75 ounces (50 grams).

According to the product's nutrition facts chart, one cake counts as one serving. In actuality, I find it difficult to eat just one of these snack cakes, because they taste so good.

Price
The regular retail price charged for one 3.5 ounce package of Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells at Hartford, Connecticut area food retailers is approximately $0.75c.

To me, this price seems very reasonable, actually downright inexpensive. Same size packages of similar, name brand snack cakes normally retail for roughly twice the price of these snack cakes.

Texture / Consistency
The texture offered by Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bellsis soft, fresh and appealing. The cake part of the chocolate bells is nice and soft, without being crumbly and the creme filling is light, smooth and creamy. The exterior of each chocolate bell is coated with a flavorful chocolate coating that is a little bit firmer than the other components. All put together, these components form a delightful snack cake that features a satisfying mouth feel.

Nutritional Facts
Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells contain 200 calories, with 80 calories from fat, per one cake serving. These delicious snack cakes also contain 5 grams of saturated fat, 0 grams trans fat, 9 grams total fat, 10 mg of cholesterol, 250 mg of sodium, 30 grams total carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of dietary fiber, 21 grams of sugars and 1 gram of protein, per one cake serving.

Taste / Flavor
As soon as I took the first bite of one of the Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells, I noticed a mellow, yet pronounced chocolate flavor. It wasn't until I was almost done eating one of the cakes that I noticed a yellow, brown and white circle with a little Hershey's chocolate bar protruding from it, printed on the front label. The words "Made with Hershey's Cocoa" are printed in the circle.

The chocolate cake part of this item features a rich, yet subtle flavor that speaks of high quality chocolate, which I'm guessing comes from the Hershey's Cocoa. The creme filling in this snack cake tastes like a standard, yet tasty creme filling and the chocolate flavored coating is rich and decadent. When combined, these flavors produce a satisfying taste treat that is not too sweet.

Packaging
Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells are packaged in an attractive brown and beige plastic like wrapper that is easy to open. The front label features a close up illustration of one of the chocolate bells and the rear label lists all pertinent ingredient and nutritional information.

Overall Rating
These creme filled chocolate cakes are similar in flavor, size and texture to name brand cakes made by companies such as Hostess and Drakes, except they are priced much lower. Lately, I've been seeing Mrs. Freshley's products at more and more retailers and I'm not surprised, because they are so tasty and reasonably priced.

If you happen to see Mrs. Freshley's Chocolate Bells on sale anywhere, I highly recommend that you try them. Hopefully, you'll be glad you did.
