Mrs. Smith's Heavenly 100 Strawberry Mousse: Heavenly Taste or Heavenly Health?

Paul Bright
Mrs. Smith is a fickle lady. I've never met her personally, but everything I know about Mrs. Smith comes down to one thing: sugary, fattening, tasty desserts. Every pie, every custard, and every recipe I've ever had from Mrs. Smith has been a rich piece of goodness that should only be saved for special occasions. I usually end up eating Mrs. Smith's desserts on the occasion of "I have a craving" day.

Mrs. Smith, however, may be suffering from an identity crisis. Now I see that she is trying to market a-gasp! - healthy dessert called Mrs. Smith's Heavenly 100. I decided to give it a shot starting with the Strawberry Mousse flavor with admittedly little faith. How could a sweet, devilish lady design a dessert that would be good for me and just as tasty?

Appearance and Nutrition. The package comes in two servings, 100 calories each. The box makes the mousse look nice and creamy, but the mini cups they came in were very plain. They looked like those little kids' single serving cups you got in the cafeteria. Mrs. Smith should consider that if you're going to make me a healthy dessert, make it look more appealing!

Nutrition-wise, Mrs. Smith's Heavenly 100 doesn't fill you up with a lot of junk. There's only 2.5 fat grams, 17 grams of carbs and 2 grams of protein. There are only 25 calories that come from the milk fat. And the sweeteners are more on the natural side, I guess: Corn syrup, sugar, and strawberry puree.

Taste. Mrs. Smith's Heavenly 100 tastes very, well, plain. Like I said earlier, I didn't have many high expectations for a healthy dessert, and this didn't disappoint or excite me. Yes, there are strawberry bits. Yes, it's as creamy as it looks on the box. But having it as a stand-alone dessert for 100 calories left me rather unsatisfied. There just wasn't any bam! to the Mrs. Smith's Heavenly 100 Strawberry Mousse. Ironically, I didn't even want any more dessert.

Mrs. Smith should probably focus on continuing with poisoning my veins with the sugary desserts I'm used to. The Heavenly 100 Strawberry Mousse might be a decent topper for angel food cake, but I really don't think it's worth buying in order to have a tasty dessert that doesn't give you excessive calories or rot your teeth. Pick this dessert for the kids if they just think ice cream is just ice cream. But for adults? I'd rather have a Mrs. Smith's cherry cobbler pie.
