MrTechnical Review of the 2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee!

I have owned five Jeeps now and I currently drive a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo which is a first generation model. It is old and beat up, but the mechanics are sound and the leather seats plus stereo and power goodies still work very well.

So now we are onto about three generations later in dog years, and the newest Jeep Grand Cherokee looks similar in that way that you can pick out a pair of cousins in a crowd. The body styling has evolved to a sleeker less boxy look with shorter glass and taller side panels when compared to the older style Grand Cherokee models. Even the classic Jeep Grille work has undergone a slow change to something more industrial looking, and the creature comforts are literally through the roof, moon roof that is!

The Jeep Grand Cherokee model I would choose over all the others hands down if I could afford to feed her the fuel she so desperately craves would be the SRT8 version. This machine has a 6.1 Liter V-8 Engine which puts 420 horsepower with 420 foot pounds of torque into all for wheels at once, if you choose to be in four wheel drive. This is an amazing Jeep and the SRT8 option would seem like overkill to the average layperson who perhaps does not own a Jeep, but this kind of torque can make this beast an instant rock climber, providing the transmission and transfer case gearing goes low enough.

Some of the really great options for the latest models are the hill start and descent option where the vehicle stays in place until you release the brake for a brief time delay and the car will begin to move as you press the gas pedal. This brake assist system is a simple control valve on a time delay which releases the brake fluid pressure slowly enough that you can move your foot from brake to gas. This allows for smoother and safer takeaways from a hill start.

You can get a nicely equipped SRT8 model for about $43,000. The largest downside to this car would have to be the mileage at 12 mpg in the city and 16 mpg on the highway! If you go backwards to the base model you can have a Jeep Grand Cherokee in your driveway for about $29,000. This model comes in two wheel drive which is powered on the rear axle. Really the added cost of the four wheel drive is well worth the price.

Thanks to a 210 horsepower V-6 engine the Laredo base model Grand Cherokee fuel mileage improves up to 16 mpg city, and 21 mpg highway!
