MrTechnical's Selection of the 7 Best Used SUVs
What Are Seven of the Best SUVs from 2007? Here is My Detail Filled List!
Depending upon exactly how the previous owner used and maintained his or her SUV, you can find a cherry SUV hiding in the local newspaper classified ads. Ours is the "Good News" and there are always at least ten to fifteen good used SUVs listed in this little newspaper every week.
The other great place to look is the local dealership who takes trades of the variety SUV you may be interested in. In fact if you are wise and can go chat with the sales manager they may be able to alert you when a specific model is coming in as a trade so you can get first dibs on the used SUV of your dreams.
There are at least seven SUV models that I would be on the lookout for if I were in the market for a new SUV. For right now I am happy to stick with the 1995 Grand Cherokee and 1997 Wrangler SUVs that I own thank you!
Here is my top seven list of what I feel are the best used SUVs that you can find almost anywhere. I chose all mid size 2007 SUV models since these are the model year and vehicle type that will be coming in for trades at dealerships across the country soon.
1) Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. This Jeep model has nothing but pure off road pulling power creeping under the hood. With the SRT8 package you get a true off road capable machine that has a 6.1 Liter V8 engine pumping up some eye popping 420 horsepower! For just around $26,662 you can have one of the most capable a luxurious 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokees ever built. Mileage is dismal at 11 city and 14 highway, but for the off road racer in all of us this would be an excellent run about weekend rider. Make no mistake this Jeep is pretty darn fast on the street too!
2) Mazda CX-7 Sport AWD. This is an awesome example of what great cars Mazda is capable of building. It does not look like any other SUV out there, and its unique demeanor gives it some fairly special amenities in the cabin as well. Though it has only a 2.3 Liter In-line four cylinder engine that generates 244 horsepower it gets plenty of zip to all four of the wheels! For $15,222 you can have a really sporty and unique all wheel drive SUV. Mileage could be better, but 16 in the city and 22 on the highway is not too bad for this class and size SUV.
3) Land Rover LR3 V6 SE. These British made luxury SUVs are really awesome in the smooth handling and civilized ride even when off road! With a 216 horsepower 4.0 Liter V6 engine it seems a bit underpowered, especially when you consider the city mileage is only 14 miles per gallon and highway is 19. This model can be found for about $22,983 which is a really good price for how much car you get!
4) Lexus RX 350 AWD. This luxurious SUV has one of the best ride quality ratings of any SUV ever. They come with a 3.5 Liter V6 engine which quietly sends 270 Horsepower to all of the wheels all the time! These are a steal at around $24,749. The fuel economy is great at 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway, which is not too poor considering it is this luxurious. This car constantly receives the highest customer satisfaction ratings of any other SUV in its class.
5) Kia Sorento LX 4WD. If Budget is Better then this one is the best! Your price for a nicely equipped LX model with four wheel drive is only $11,020. This rugged mid size SUV is a true off road machine that has a potent 3.8 Liter V6 engine. This power plant is pounding out 262 horsepower and delivering 15 mpg city and 20 mpg highway! For an inexpensive SUV this is a great looking and well built SUV.
6) Hyundai Santa Fe GLS AWD. This is an upscale and luxurious SUV with a mid scale SUV price. These can be found for around $15,767 and they are a bargain at that price range. The 3.3 Liter V6 engine creates 242 horsepower to the all wheel drive transfer case. Hyundai cars and SUVs are great at delivering great fuel economy and this model is not an exception. They are rated for 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
7) Ford Edge SE AWD. Ford made radical design changes to make the Edge look really different from all the rest of the SUV pack. For an entry level price of $16,328 you can have a luxurious SUV that has a powerful 3.5 Liter V6 engine that generates a solid 265 horsepower! These all wheel drive models get 16 mpg in the city and 22 on the highway which is not too bad for an SUV this size.
Honorable mention would be to a model that was last made in 1986 and it was the Jeep Scrambler. I think that Chrysler Jeep management should take note of the buzz over the used market on these. I saw one which is listed for sale at $39,000. Not bad for a car that sold for less than a third of that back in 1986. Of course if there were ever a decent Jeep Scrambler for sale at a reasonable cost, then I would have to seriously consider finding a way to add that vehicle to my fleet! Since they only made these from 1981 until 1986 and only 230,000 were ever made, they have become rare and are now highly sought after.
