MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell Badgers Teenage Girl About Sarah Palin

Unprofessional and Uncooth

Mark Whittington
MSNBC's Norah O'Donnell must have been out sorts, covering Sarah Palin's first stop on her book tour in Michigan. How else can one explain Norah O'Donnell's merciless grilling of a girl of about thirteen standing in line to get her book signed?

The girl was wearing a T shirt that showed disdain for the various bailouts that the government has given to certain private businesses since September, 2008. That was enough for Norah O'Donnell to swoop down on the girl and, using a great Sam Donaldson impression, began to demand whether the girl knew that Sarah Palin "had supported the bailout?"

Mind, a little fact checking will cause one to discover that indeed Sarah Palin had supported the September 2008 bailout of banks. This was the bailout of which the public was assured that the future of the economy was dependent on. Almost everyone, including Barack Obama, supported that bailout at the time. Sarah Palin opposed subsequent bailouts, such as those for the car companies.

One wonders what Norah O'Donnell's motivation was? Was she trying to find out whether a barely teenage girl who doubtless looked up to Sarah Palin as a role model knew the intricacies of economic politics for the past year or so? Congratulations to Norah O'Donnell; she discovered that she did not.

Badgering politicians is one thing. Being hectored to by the media comes with the job, along with the limos, the big salaries, and the endless ethics investigations. Teenage fans do not expect to be backed into a corner by some kind of scary media harridan about her idol.

Mind it is not as if Norah O'Donnell were even handed when it comes to child supporters of politicians. Norah O'Donnell was quite understanding and supportive of those creepy children singing praise songs to Barack Obama, as if her were Jesus Christ, only more cool.

"Hey kid, did you know Barack Obama's health care plan will make it more likely your granny will die?" One suspects that no one would have the sociopathology to ask such a question to a starry eyed, rug rat Obama fan.

Oh maybe it is the fact that conservatives have manners. Right wingers might roll their eyes at the sight of fresh faced, well scrubbed tykes singing, "Barack Hussein Obama, mmm mmm mmm" like a group of Hitler Jugend warbling paeans to the Fuehrer, But no one on the right would ever think of challenging them. The kids will find out soon enough, at the latest when they get jobs and start paying taxes, that their idol has feet of clay.

Actually it looks like Norah O'Donnell got it wrong when she claimed that the girl voted for McCain and Palin in the last election. She was seventeen, so the story that Norah O'Donnell ambushed and badgered a girl still stands.

"Conservatives have manners" ROFL at that! And the Granny will die rhetoric is so pathetic.

This was a hilarious "op-ed" piece, Mark. Your spoofing of how knee-jerk conservatives hate being questioned is spot-on. Great satire. "Conservatives have manners" ... that was the best part. Very funny satire.

    P.S. It's spelled "uncouth."

...and makes you sound a little like a thirteen year old t-shirt wearing political parrot in dire need of the critical thinking skills that you apparently despise.

Finally, please note the amusing typo - 'as if her were Jesus Christ.' I'm leaving that one alone, but still, you might want to invest in a grammar checker.

Re: 'Obama's healthcare plan will make it more likely your granny will die,' I'm wondering if you really thought that comment through. There's a very sensible reason why nobody would waste time quizzing rug rats about that one, which is to say that it's a very stupid question indeed.

The probability that your granny will die - along with the probability that you, I, and my Great Aunt Maureen will die - is 1. That is, it's certain. It's unfortunate, I know, but Obama or no Obama, we all die eventually, and your prediction involves no timescale.

Now, if what you mean is 'Obama's healthcare plan will make it more likely that your granny will die younger than present statistical evidence would predict' or 'will die as a result of insufficient medical care' or whatever, then say it, won't you? That way, when your prediction is vindicated by evidence in five or ten years time we can say that you told us so. As it is, your statement is meaningless, has no predictive value whatsoever, a

I saw the coverage. Great job by Nora on asking about the facts. The girl was older than 13 and wore the shirt. Nora asked is she knew the facts about her shirt%21

O'Donnell addressed the controversy in a subsequent broadcast on MSNBC and claimed that the girl she badgered was old enough to vote in the last election. Alright, that would make her 19 or 20, but that makes the behavior only a little less egregious. It did not matter that Jackie Seal volunteered to be on camera. She did not volunteer to try to explain the ins and outs of economic politics to an aggressive, badgering reporter who herself was somewhat wide of the whole truth. And the fact remains that supporters of liberal politicians, like Barack Obama, do not get this kind of treatment from the "lamestream media."

  • Nolan O'Brian11/19/2009

Wrong. The woman was old enough to vote in the last election, and she volunteered to speak on camera.

I saw that interview. She was way older than 13 and was wearing a tshirt that said "I spent $700,000,000,000 in bailouts and all I got was this lousy t-shirt." She had engaged in conversation with the young woman for a few minutes prior to asking her if she realized that Palin did support the bailouts.

Your characterization of this is a distortion of the facts. You also fail to include the entire conversation, primarily because it would not benefit your cause.

This isn't "reporting" anything. It's a biased screed.
