Accessible from the 210 and 10 freeways and located right off of Mountain Avenue/Baseline, Mt. Baldy is a decent 40 minute drive from downtown Los Angeles. The drive up the mountain is not too difficult either, and within 20 minutes you should be able to reach the ski lift station parking area. The great part about Mt. Baldy is that during the off seasons, the ski lifts still operate and natives and visitors can access the ski lifts for a beautiful scenic ride to the summit. The ski lift will take you to the top where there is a restaurant and bar called "Top of the Notch Bar and Grill". Once you reach the top, there are several hiking trails, all which are of the moderate level and all provide beautiful scenic views. You can also hike your way up to the top from the parking lot area, but I would highly recommend taking the ski lift because the views are simply spectacular.
Some things to make note of. Make sure to bring water and snacks if you will plan on hiking a lot. Also, even though during the summer season it may reach to temperatures in the eighties or nineties in the city, once you take the ski lift up, you will definitely notice the sudden drop in temperature. I have learned from experience and jackets and long pants are a must since the ride can be pretty chilly.
The ski lifts operate only on weekends and holidays. Ski lift tickets can be pricey ($20 per person), but the resort's website and onsite ticket station offer discounts. Parking is free and if you desire to stay overnight to gain the full experience of what the place has to offer, there is lodging available at the Mt. Baldy village located before the parking lot area. There is also a visitor center for those seeking more information and guide, and other trails that lead up the surrounding mountain areas.
