MTV to Hire Citizen Journalists for Political Coverage

MTV has taken a step toward connecting with real people and real journalism through a new partnership with the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In association with The Knight News Challenge, MTV News is hiring 51 bloggers, citizen journalists, and vloggers (one from each state) to help cover political news in 2008.

For every citizen journalist in cyberspace, a chance like this one rarely shows its face. MTV has decided to employ 51 amateur journalists to report politic news for the Choose or Lose campaign in 2008. According to the news release by MTV, the selected writers and vloggers will be stacked high with production equipment and flown to New York City for an orientation.

After orientation, the MTV journalists will report on political news weekly FOR PAY! According to the on line application, MTV wants to know who you are, what you like to write or report on and even wants to know a few answers to some relevant questions.

The part-time, for pay gig is the first of its kind and offers citizen journalists a chance to be broadcast on MTV, MTVU, MTV2 and MTV Tres weekly. For journalists who do not make it to these cable channels, the reports published by MTV will be available on line as well as through mobile news to cell phones across the world.

Qualified applicants, according to the news release, will need to be over 18 years of age, a resident of the state in which they will be hired to report from January 2008 to November 2008, and be able to travel for work throughout the state and report the news each week.

The MTV Choose or Lose campaign has generated more young voters than any of the other "Vote Now" campaigns combines. It is estimated that 21 million voters decided to air their political voices in the 2004 politic election thanks to the information provided to young people through the MTV Choose or Lose campaign.

For all citizens journalists who want a shot at the big leagues, the application deadline in Friday, September 21st, 2007. According to the new release, MTV is looking for citizen journalists who have their ear to the ground and their fingers on the pulse of young people and politics alike.

MTV will be partnering up with MySpace to add even more recognition to the political candidates through live question and answer sessions. The first partnership will take place with John Edwards on September 27th at the University of New Hampshire campus.

    This is a cool idea, but seems like another move away from the music video genre that has gotten MTV into trouble recently.
