MTV is No Longer "Music Television"

Kristina Jones
MTV had a vision of being a music channel and it was for a very long time. In recent years, MTV has been drifting further away from its roots as the pioneer of music television by becoming the reality show hub on television. I am not saying this is a bad thing at all, but when your name is "Music Television" people expect you to show just music.

From the "Real World" to "Road Rules" to "Real World/ Road Rules Challenge", MTV has lost its touch with being a music television station. Not only has the station started the above, but the station has begun to spin out of control with various dating shows, My Sweet 16, Cribs, and now Juvies. Of course MTV still has its music television shows such as TRL and Sucker Free, as well as other shows at early times of the day, but during the day there is hardly any focus on music.

It seems like every time I turn on MTV, they are promoting a new reality show. It really becomes an irritation because I, like many others, want to see the new music and not the same Top 10 artists of the day during TRL or Sucker Free. MTV has forced me to listen to my music channels from my cable company to hear the latest music from new and popular artists. It is not fair to advertise as MTV and not be a music television station. If MTV were to be a solely music station or "RTV" for their reality television shows I would not have a problem with what they want to show. It almost borders with misleading advertisement.

I am not saying MTV should not exist. I am simply stating the channel needs to rethink what type of media it is trying to promote. If it is supposed to be a music television channel, then by all means be real to the label and keep it music oriented. If it is supposed to be various types of media, then rename the station something else. Simply put, MTV was created solely for the purpose of showing viewers music videos and not another genre of television. Of course, MTV generates much of their sales from advertising artists, but the do generate a lot of cash through the creation of its reality television shows.

In short, MTV needs to keep it real. MTV should go back to its roots and show only music videos. The reality shows could be created under a subsidiary of MTV, as suggested before, and name it RTV (reality television). Bring back the music videos 24-7 MTV please!

MTV is terrible now. All those reality shows involve the fakest people on earth. Sure they have SOME music, but the music on there nowadays is terrible. I decided to watch "top 10 countdown" yesterday because I was sick. Guess what Number 1 was? "Blah blah blah" by Kesha. One of the worst songs I've ever heard. She has no talent whatsoever. Anyways, MTV needs to change back to just music of ALL genres. Not this mainstream bulls**t.

I stopped watching when I noticed this too.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. MTV is nothing but "fake" reality type shows. YUK. And yes, it IS a bad thing.

I know what you're talking about. I turned it on the other day and America's Next Top Model was on MTV. No, that's not music. They've certainly gone off the path. You're right.

Too bad you can't convince MTV that they all music format was best. They lost my viewership a LONG time ago. Great Article.

Like Tracy I remember when MTV first came out (age check - sigh). The glimpses I've gotten of it in the last years equated to soft porn. Great article Kristina.

I completely agree with you on this one. I remember watching music videos everyday on MTV, but now I don't even bother to check whats on anymore because I know it's going to be anything but music related. They should leave the reality t.v. shows for MTV2 and bring back the music to the original MTV.
