MTV Video Music Awards, Not Music to Anyone's Ears

The other night the MTV music awards aired live on their own channel. I tuned in because of the much heralded tribute to Michael Jackson. I was left speechless.
While the tribute to Michael Jackson was enjoyable and further reminded me and I'm sure a lot of other people about the sadness of his loss, the award show itself was disgraceful. Hosted by Russell Brand, and Englishman and, I'm guessing a comedienne, there was no saving this show. It began with a heartfelt tribute by Madonna regarding Michael Jackson. She was quick to point out the similarities and differences between herself and the King of Pop. While her words were complimentary her comparisons were needless. She may have been sincere but she came off as just another celebrity riding the coat tails of the dead.
When the tribute was over, the audience was subjected to Russell Brand and his particular "brand" of humor. I realize that these were the MTV awards and that reverence is thrown out the window but, please. His jokes were tasteless at best, incoherent continuously, and bordered on the disgusting. Whenever the cameras would cut to the audience the look of disgust was written all over the faces of the celebrities. I had the pleasure of watching the show with some 20 something people and they found Brand not a brand they would choose.
Then the awards were finally given out. One of the earliest awards presented was for Best Female Video. Many fine ladies were up for the prize and all were deserving. The winner, however, was Taylor Swift. Imagine being a teenager, up for an award, and then bam; your name is announced as the winner. Miss Swift was truly surprised at her own win and floated to the stage to accept her moon man prize. Moments into her speech she was interrupted. Kanye West felt it necessary to grab the microphone from her hands and give a shout out to his obvious favorite Beyonce.
Oh give me a break! Taylor Swift was mortified and just stood there looking as tough she was about to cry. Technical directors obviously had no clue what to do next and cut to a taped segment involving Tracy Morgan and Eminem which made absolutely no sense and once again, lacked humor. This was a running theme throughout the program. I guess Ole Em must have sold his soul to MTV as why he lowered himself after his own debacle last year of having Sacha Cohen lower himself unto Em, I will never know.
Later in the evening, Beyonce, ever the lady, honored Taylor Swift. She was, after all, just as much a victim as Miss Swift herself. She tactfully recalled what it was like to be a young performer and be called up on stage. The audience did boo Mr. West but the moment was already gone. It left Miss Swift with a bad memory and the further indignity of being reminded of the incident all throughout the night.
Then there was Lady GaGa. Dressed in a ridiculous she managed to outdo her own silliness with her performance. Please. I am all for all types of music being performed but her performance art involving fake blood and dangling as though she were hanged was stupid more than anything else. Her new name should be Lady GoGo as in please do.
The awards were more about selling out and playing to celebrity news mongers and not about talent. Video music awards from MTV should be better named video music awards from Mediocre Talentless Vultures.
