Muddus Drop-Leaf Table by Ikea: Multipurpose Table and Desk for Small Spaces

It's like Someone in Sweden Knew Exactly What I Needed

J. Bartleby
During a recent trip to Ikea, a whole crowd of people were gathered around the Muddus drop-leaf table admiring its simple modular design. A fan of multi-use yet minimalist furniture, I had been looking for something that could serve as a narrow desk in a small space while also functioning as a spare table for other purposes. The second I saw this table, I said, "this is exactly what I was hoping someone would design." Sturdy, durable, and easy to assemble, the Muddus drop-leaf table works as both a petite desk (when the leaf is down) and as a table with double the surface area (when the leaf is up and slid into position). For me, the Muddus drop-leaf table was an ideal solution: a place to work with a laptop - but also a place to play Scrabble or have a cute dinner for two in a studio apartment. This is quite possibly the best $40 I've ever spent at Ikea, and for those know my love of that store, that's really saying something.

Muddus Drop-Leaf Table by Ikea: How does it work?

There are two positions for this piece of furniture, the "mini-desk" and the table. Because the two leaves are attached to each other via hinges, the extra leaf can either hang from the back of the "mini-desk" setup or it can be lifted up and slid so that both of the leaves are spread out over the frame to create a table. As opposed to other drop leaf tables I've seen that simply prop up the extra leaf, the Muddus drop-leaf table stabilizes it by sliding the whole surface (both leaves) such that the crack between them is centered over the base for stability.

More about the Muddus Drop-Leaf Table by Ikea:

- It's extremely easy to assemble - 15 minutes, tops.

- Color selection is: Red, Yellow, Green, and White. I opted for red because I wanted something bright and fun. The red, yellow, and green tables are totally uni-colored (base and leaves are the same) while the white table consists of white leaves paired with a greyish silver base.

- The sides and bars are sturdy metal while top is a durable, easy-to-wipe laminate.

- Dual functionality as table and desk make the Muddus perfect for college students or anyone who may have a small bedroom or a studio apartment where modular design and attractiveness are the goals. But even if it won't become an everyday table in your household, it's the ultimate in simple, fun, and practical design.
