Weird doesn't even begin to describe this game. Geeks Unleashed's cast includes Tux(the Linux mascot), and Domo-Kun(Japanese cartoon character that developed a cult following online a few years back) amongst a pretty goofy squad of humans.
Geeks are a pretty diverse cast in this game. one of them is a ninja that goes by the name of "Pirate Monkey", one apparently enjoys playing with radio controlled cars, and one of them lives to flip people off after they win a match. All and all, it's a pretty actuate representation of geek culture.
Geeks Unleashed's silliness extends far beyond character the persona's of it's combatants. In a game where you can wail on a smug looking penguin, you can also use flatulence as a pretty effective projectile attack.
When they aren't' bending over to let loose a fart bomb in the general direction of foes, their constantly flailing around in a halfhearted effort to throw punches and kicks. Again, it's just like Mortal Kombat(visually)...only a tad bit cornier.
I don't understand the initial hype around that series. If a first impression really is important, the digitized characters in the original Mortal Kombat should have kept potential players away from the arcade cabinet, if not for the pools of red paint passed off as gushing blood.
Geeks Unleashed has the same niche factor going for it. If you look seeing a bunch of random guys, who had too much time on their hands, duke it out in 2d, this game is for you. If you are a Linux fan who hates everything related to Microsoft, or are a fan of Domo-Kun, you may also want to take a crack at this particular Mugen video game.
If you are not like me, and think this whole graphic style used to look cool(and still think it's nice for some reason), and would have liked to play Tattoo Assassins before it was canceled, you will most likely find some enjoyment from Geeks Unleashed as well.
This is obviously meant to be purely a offbeat fighter, as opposed to a technically sound and balanced game. It gets the job done quite nicely as a silly diversion starring a bunch of nerds who fight in a very nerdy manner.
