Mugen Site: Funnyvent

C.B. Jones
In my on going quest to document all of the non-warehouse Mugen sites on the internet, I've come across more than a few with limited content that still managed to grab my attention. Funnyvent is one such web page.

The first thing I noticed about the Funnyvent is the much larger than any site banner should be monstrosity that greets visitors who happen upon the site. Perhaps monstrosity is too harsh a word. It's an interesting illustration of a women holding a skull, with the text "Funnyvent" emblazon in the upper left corner.

Noting wrong with showing off ones art on their own private website. I dig people who are able to draw things without their hands cramping up half way through finishing a piece. If you insist on using a 700px × 994px image as your banner, it would make more sense if used as a splash page instead of being set above the sites navigation menu. such a layout is rather questionable.

Instead of complaining more about personal preference, I'll just get to the point. Main attraction for Mugen fans: Rick form Splatterhouse. This is only the second time I've seen good ole' demon killer Rick converted to the world of Mugen. As a fan on that series, I can't get enough of seeing different takes of what Rick would be like in a 2D brawler.

This version seems to be somewhat of a sorcerer. He summons demons and other objects to attacks any unlucky foe that stands in his way. Think Kamek from Mario World, only with a Jason Voorhees style mask.

Maybe the creator thought rick would do well in ECW, because he also gave the guy a chair attack. Looks pretty cook when it shatters after hitting the opponent. If only the trusty chainsaw were apart of his arsenal...

So it's an interesting take on an arcade legend. Really, that's all well and good. The only thing that ticks me off it the fact that Rick's file size is 16 freaking megabytes. There have been good Mugen full games that barely exceed 15 megabytes. Surely a bit of file compression could have been used here.

While I didn't any alternate play modes or anything to warrant such a beefy file size, there are a few quirky cameos in some of Ricks attacks that caught my attention. I never would have thought of Pooka form Dig Dug being a slow moving projectile. Fygar maybe, but certainly not Pooka. Oh how I wish the readme text file weren't in Japanese.

Funnyvent.
