Multicultural Party Invitations: International Flags

Multicultural Party Invitation Materials: Get a poster or calendar that displays a large variety of international flags. Some office and teacher supply stores sell these items for $3 or less. One package of jumbo sized Popsicle sticks and Elmer's school glue will also be needed to make international flags into multicultural party invitations. Gather several sheets of 8½ x11 inch white multipurpose paper or tracing paper. One sheet of paper should be enough to make up to three multicultural party invitations. A pencil, stapler, crayons or markers and multicolored construction paper will be needed to make the international flag invitations as well.

Multicultural Party Invitation Instructions: Cut the white multipurpose paper horizontally into three even sections. The paper can also be cut in half for two sections if you want the international flag invitations to be larger. Fold each section of paper in half to make a square for your multicultural party invitations. Reopen these sections and cut them in half to make individual squares. Draw a different country flag onto the white squares using a pencil and your international poster for reference. Color these international flag images using crayons or markers.

An alternate option is to gather international flag images on your computer and resize them in a word processing or photo software program. If you choose to make these multicultural party invitations using the computer method, keep the 8½ x11 inch sheets of paper in tact until after printing. Between two and six flags can be printed on each sheet depending on your preferred size for these international flag invitations. You can also hire a graphic artist to draw international flags among your multicultural party invitations. This method may increase the expenses for the party invitations, which can impact hosts working with a small budget.

Cut out two blank white multipurpose paper squares that match the size of your international flag images. Set these blank squares aside and cut the multicolored construction paper into two or three sections based on your preferred invitation size. Fold the construction paper in half to form a square. The construction paper should resemble a small booklet. Glue one international flag image onto the front side of each folded section of construction paper.

Choose paper booklets and flags that either match or compliment each other in colors. Allow the flag images to dry for 15 minutes and write your party information in English onto one blank square. List the same party information in the native language that matches each international flag on another blank square. The party invitation that represents France should list information in the French language while Italian versions are placed on the flag for Italy. Open your folded construction section and glue the English-language square into the inner left side of these multicultural party invitations. Glue the native language square onto the right side, directly across from your English version.

Each square should be placed near the outer edges to make sure that any party information will not be overlapped when you add the Popsicle sticks. Guests should immediately view the native language when opening their international flag invitations. Providing two versions will allows guests to learn quick terms in a new language while being invited to your party at the same time. Wait for your interior squares to dry and then glue one jumbo Popsicle stick onto the inside of each square. The top of each wooden stick should meet the top edge of your international flag invitations. Staple the construction paper sides together near the edges of your Popsicle sticks. Doing so will keep the sticks from becoming a distraction to your party information.
