Multi-Stitch Vertical Knit Necklace

Eloah James
A tutorial on how to make a multi-stitch vertical knit necklace. This jewelry piece works best with natural yarns.

Materials
Skeins of yarn in at least two colors and/or styles
Knitting needles
Upholstery needle.

You also may wish to add beads, charms and other accents to this piece, but they are not required.

Band Cast on six stitches. Knit twelve rows in garter stitch (all knit). Knit the next twelve rows using the moss or seed stitch. Knit the next 12 rows using the box stitch. Knit another 72 rows in stockinette stitch. Knit 12 more rows each of box stitch, moss stitch, and then garter stitch. Bind off. This is the part of the necklace that goes around your neck. The ends will be sewn onto a series of shapes, which will be sewn together.

Bar Cast on eight stitches. Knit nine rows in moss stitch. Knit the next nine rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off. This piece will be sewn directly to the neck band, to hang vertically down the chest. The other pieces will be sewn to the bottom end of this strip.

Rectangle Cast on 12 stitches. Knit 18 rows in stockinette stitch. Bind off. This will be sewn onto the bar and then the next piece will be sewn on top of the rectangle.

Diamond Cast on one stitch. Knit one. Make an increase by casting on a second stitch. Purl this row. Turn the work and cast on a third stitch. Knit the row. Continuing increasing and alternating knit and purl with each row in this way until there are 11 stitches on your needle. Knit the first two stitches, and then slip the first stitch over the second as if to bind off. Knit the rest of the row. Purl the first two stitches and slip the first over the second. Purl the rest of the row. Repeat this process until only one stitch remains on the needle. Bind off.

Assembly Thread the upholstery needle and attach the bar to the band using one of the methods found here. Sew the rectangle to the bar so that the bottom half of the bar is sewn to the top half of the rectangle. The rectangle may be oriented either vertically or horizontally. Sew the diamond to the rectangle so that each point faces one side of the rectangle. Sew on any beads, charms or accents to the bar, rectangle, diamond or band, as desired. Weave in any tails using the needle.
