Multitasking

Too Much like Tartar Sauce

Jean Bailey Robor
I'm beginning to think that multitasking is overrated. Today at work I was trying to do way too many things at once. My main focus was in creating a certification test for the business analysts in our department. In addition to working on that, I also tweaked an article, sent it out for review, read and replied to a few emails (A few? Who really gets only a few?) and met with another coworker to discuss yet another project that's due by next week. I was busy.

After I put the finishing touches on the test, I emailed it to my manager for review. Soon I received a response asking some questions. I emailed back, asked a few questions myself, and set about on one of my other tasks, keeping an eye on my email in case I needed to tweak the test or could finalize it 'as is.'

In the midst of all this flurry of activity, I was emailing a friend and somehow the conversation, as it was just after lunchtime, turned to food and how much I like the new wraps at McDonald's, the Big Mac ones with the special sauce.

So, I'm working away and an email pops in and I immediately read it to find out what my manager thinks of the test I've been working for days on and I read, "Well, it seems to be too much like tartar sauce and I don't like that either."

Just as my brain was trying to figure out what the heck that meant in relation to the test I'd created-I mean, I know managers speak a different language from the rest of us, but this was ridiculous-I realized the email wasn't from him at all. I laughed out loud.

Multitasking...it's too much like tartar sauce.

See what I mean? I was listening to my sister on a call on speakerphone when commenting on your article. Notice how I spelled "thought". I don't think it's spelled thst.... lol

I thst you were going to say you had sent the e-mail about the wrap to your supervisor who answered it automatically with no questions asked. haha! With my aging brain - multi-tasking = interesting and sometimes comedic results!

Jean is right. Multi-tasking is like tartar sauce.
1 cup mayonnaise: the really big tasks.
2 tbsp lemon juice: tasks that make you pucker.
1 tbsp minced onions: tasks that make you cry.
1 tbsp sweet relish: the fun tasks.
