If you love celebrations just walk onto the streets and dance and sing to your hearts content. You do the same if you want to give vent to your religious or patriotic or any kind of emotions. Don't bother about the traffic jumbles all around you. The fellow citizens understand you too well for their 'needs' to be orchestrated maybe later on. The police are also very benevolent; they only ask you to take prior permission.
If you have to organize a family wedding just take over the streets or lanes available to you and erect structures there. Your good neighbors would never object due to their 'needs' to be orchestrated maybe later on. This fundamental right is equally applicable for all kinds of religious cultural or political events.
If you love tobacco or betel nut chewing you can blissfully litter the streets with your colorful spit. From different vantage points like the bus or car windows or while simply walking. Regardless of your profession whether you are a pedestrian passenger or driver.
The abject life of the slum dwellers gets somewhat brightened by this extraordinary street freedom. For living they invade the pavements and build tenements equipped with all basic amenities like water electricity and telephony. By now the city builders must have forgotten what pavements are essentially meant for.
The slums naturally surround any big residential colony. The boundary roads so have to bear the brunt of their basic biological needs. The internal colony lanes have their uses cut out. During daytime these are fun-filled noise-filled playgrounds. If it's bright sunshine the classic game of cricket is unfolded and if it's raining then soccer is played. During evenings and nights these streets become entertainment parks. The slum dwellers come out in hordes with their mobiles flashing and chit-chat and make merry endlessly either walking or sitting down cozily. Some of them are even more considerate. Fearing pollution in their hutments they enact family quarrels too in the hapless streets. If you are a proud colony resident you cannot complain because you depend on them for your housemaids plumbers cleaners laborers and all. At best, you can bask in the entertainments shows free of cost.
So next time you come to Mumbai just observe and enjoy. You cannot do much better than that. Learn to be street savvy while in Mumbai.
