Murals on Glenwood Ave Tell History of Rogers Park
Neighborhood: Rogers Park
Chicago, IL 60626
United States of America
For those of us interested in learning more about the history of Rogers Park, all we have to do is take a walk by the train tracks. Several of the murals incorporated in the ongoing Mile of Murals project depict the history of Rogers Park.

One such stretch tells the literal evolution of the neighborhood from prehistoric times through early settlement and into present day in an easy-to-follow timeline. Another stretch of mural goes deeper into recent local lore, depicting prominent business owners, political figures, and musicians of Rogers Park.

As part of the Glenwood Arts District, these murals also pay homage to the coffee shops and restaurants that have been long-time neighborhood hangouts. One panel depicts patrons playing outdoor chess at No Exit, while another commemorates Barack Obama's visit to the Heartland Café in 2005.

The Mile of Murals project will eventually span from 6800 to 7200 Glenwood Avenue on both sides of the el tracks. Artists are invited to submit proposals and are selected by committee each year as the murals expand.
