Murder in the Magnolias is a murder mystery that parodies characters and plots from almost every Southern play imaginable. The farce pays special tribute to most noted and loved Southern playwright, Tennessee Williams. If you're familiar with "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof," "Streetcar Named Desire," and "The Glass Menagerie," you're sure to love this extreme-Southern play, sprinkled with familiar names, themes and symbolism from these three Williams' masterpieces.
Set in a dilapidated Mississippi mansion named Belle Acres, Murder in the Magnolias boasts a cast of demented, dysfunctional characters sure to leave you in stitches. Characters include Colonel Rance Chickenwing, Blanche Du Blank, Princess Lotta Kargo, Sherriff Billy Jerk, and a prehistoric garden complete with blood-thirsty honeysuckle vines. Toss in some yapping southern hound dogs, a VooDoo Woman, and an obligatory menacing hurricane and Murder in the Magnolias is sure to make you laugh yourself to death.
"Nothing is quiet as it seems at Belle Acres", says Paxton McCaghren, the Artistic Director for Sanctuary in the Groves Theatre West. McCaghren warns that the audience will notice several female characters with husky voices and hairy legs. Murder in the Magnolias also features a few female cast members bearing beards and hardhats.
The Sanctuary in the Groves Theatre West Murder in the Magnolias cast includes: Rick Burroughs, Tim Chaney, Mercedes Cobbett, Yazmine Cobbett, LaVetta Fowler, Larry Hines, Miranda Hollowell, Kathy Johansen, Steve Johansen, Paxton McCaghren, Beth Rameriz, and Allison Winschief.
Murder in the Magnolias is written by Tim Kelly, a former drama critic, screen and television writer and journalist.
