Murders in Large U.S Cities Up by More Than 10 Percent

In a dozen of large U.S cities, a study shows that the murder rate is up by more than 10% since 2004. A report was released Friday by the Police Executive Research Forum which stated that robberies, felony assaults and attacks that involved guns has also risen.

The Police Executive Research Forum is funded by the Justice Department, along with corporations and private organizations.

Chuck Wexler, executive director of Forum had this to say," Two years worth of double-digit increases in violent crime demonstrates an unmistakable change in the extent and nature of crime in America."

The Police Executive Research Forum has posted their report "Violent Crime in America: 24 months of Alarming Trends on their website. This part of the website is open to the public with registration required. What I found from reading it is quite disturbing.

According to the report the first indication of crime rising came in 2005. Since this time it has been PERF's top priority to monitor the recent crime trends. In August of 2006 PERF held a conference in Washington, D.C to see what was happening with crimes across the nation. More than 170 officials, of which included police chiefs and mayors from 50 cities attended this conference. The leaders determined that they were in fact an increasing amount of violent crimes in America.

PERF put together all the data that the chiefs who attended the conference had sent to them. The data showed that many cities were actually experiencing a drastic increase in violent crimes. This data is based on what the chiefs sent to them. What the chiefs have to report is based on crimes that have actually been reported.

Part of the actual report shows that from 2005 to 2006 homicide was up by 50%, robbery was up by 75%, aggravated assault was up by 33%, aggravated assault with a firearm up by 45%.

Part of the actual report also showed for 2004-2006: homicide was up by 71%, robbery up by 80%, aggravated assault was up by 43% and aggravated assault with a firearm was up by 67%.

These increases in violent crimes have become a concern for many law enforcement and political officials. It appears that the "leveling off period" for crime is over and is now on the rise, demanding more attention than ever before.

These figures were compiled based on reports from 56 Reporting Jurisdictions. The reports were also confirmed when the FBI released its own more in-depth Uniform Crime Reporting reports.

Golly Wolly, Question Everything, I sure would rather see these numbers decreasing too, tee hee

    Frankly,
The numbers of N.O. are high and rising because many of the criminal class (encouraged by the democratic party machine, i.e. used
as a way to gain increased federal funding) returned there while most other folks got jobs elsewhere. These losers couldn't get a job
because they were raised in the schools and in their minds as victims, needing a handout. What you put it is what you get back.
Stay in N.O. long enough and you'll see a return to the police stations being attacked, just like during Katrina, by black nationalists
    who are crazy with hatred.

Great article. And check out what I just wrote about: the strictest gun ban in the nation was just overturned. What timing.

I would seem that murder in New Orleans is up much much more than where it was pre-katrina-but it's not-it's just how the murders are taking place as well under the circumstances murders ae being committed-and the extent to which people are flipping out-my old city it's sad-how life has become there.Great coverage and writing in your article. Write on!

Yikes! I'd rather see these numbers start decreasing.
