Murders Row 1927 New York Yankees Not the Greatest Baseball Team of All-Time

The Murders Row 1927 New York Yankees were an unbelievable team that won 114 games out of 154 and swept the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series.

The 1927 Yankees were led by two of the greatest players of all-time in Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. The team dominated baseball like few other teams ever have but I will show here why the 1927 Murders Row Yankees were not the greatest baseball team of all-time.

1927 Yankees Had Great Pitching

In 1927 in the American League the average ERA for all pitchers was 4.14. Every single Yankees starting pitcher who had at least 10 starts in 1927 had an ERA below the league average.

George Pipgras started 21 games with an ERA of 4.11 which is close to the league average but is below it. Myles Thomas started 9 games and pitched in 12 others with an ERA of 4.87 but he was a minor part of the team. Every other Yankees starting pitcher had an ERA below 3.38 and their closer Wilcy Moore had a team best ERA of 2.28.

The 1927 New York Yankees had no real weakness in their pitching.

1927 Yankees Were Great Offensively But Had Weakness from Two Players

The 1927 New York Yankees were a great offensive team led by Babe Ruth who hit 60 HR's, scored 158 runs and had 164 RBI's and Lou Gehrig who hit 47 HR's, scored 149 runs and had 175 RBI's. But the 1927 Yankees had two starting players in its lineup who did not score runs above what the American League average was in 1927.

In 1927 in the American League there were 6,095 runs scored in 42,117 at-bats for a run average of .145.

Joe Dugan - scored 44 runs in 387 AB's for run average of .114

Bob Meusel - scored 75 runs in 516 AB's for run average of .145

Joe Dugan played 3B for the Yankees and scored 44 runs in 387 at-bats for a run average of .114. Bob Meusel played LF and scored 75 runs in 516 at-bats for a run average of .145. Meusel only matched the AL average in 1927 while Dugan was well below average.

Because there are other teams in major league baseball history that dominated offensively as well as the 1927 Yankees and also had every starting position player score runs above the league average the 1927 New York Yankees cannot be considered the greatest baseball team of all-time.

The Murders Row 1927 New York Yankees were one of the greatest baseball teams of all-time but due to weakness from two starting position players offensively it cannot be considered the greatest team of all-time.
