Murray on the Brink

British tennis star Andrew Murray finally found a way past his arch nemesis Rafael Nadal. Previously the world number one had beaten Murray on their five previous matches. Murray started the game on Saturday and comfortably won the first set 6-2. Murray also won the second set, but this was a tighter affair. All of a sudden Murray was within a set of beating Nadal. Somewhat inevitably Nadal upped his game in the third and then heavy rain hit New York. The players didn't get back on that evening, so the game would have to continue on Sunday.

When the players returned it was notable that Nadal had really upped his game and was really going after Murray. The impressive thing is that even then Murray stayed with him and kept battling away, but it was Nadal who won the tight third set. At which point Nadal would have had hopes of taking the match to five sets. Nadal again started well breaking Murray's serve early on, but Murray dug deep and was able to break back. When Murray again broke Nadal's serve it was the scot that would win and reach his first Grand Slam Final.

The impressive Murray becomes the first British play to reach the US Open final since Greg Rusedski in 1997. Murray will have to beat Roger Federer to win his first major tournament, but he boosts a 2-1 winning record against the Swiss player and will be confident. After all, his performance against Nadal suggests he can beat anyone. Murray is truly on the brink of that first major win and he is set to make it. Although he is still young Murray needs to win a major to cement his place as a world class player.

If Murray can continue to play at this level he will surely win many titles. Murray is also set to become the best British player in quite a long time. Some people have even suggested that he is future number one. Of course critics will say people are dreaming with such statements, but anything is possible for Murray. After all people laughed when Murray stated he would be a top 50 and then top 20 player. Yet here he is as a world number four and in with an excellent chance of winning the US Open. It's also interesting that Murray has always said that the US Open is his best surface, while others have argued that it should be grass. My personal opinion is that he can be great on all surfaces, but the American hard courts could just be his best.
