Murry's Original French Toast Sticks: A Product Review

Charlotte Kuchinsky
Sometimes I get tired of having the same old thing for breakfast every morning. Even though they are definitely not on my diet plan, I will occasionally spring for waffles, pancakes or even French toast sticks.

My latest foray into French toast sticks came from Murry's Family of Fine Foods. I tried their Original French Toast Sticks because they are vitamin fortified. I can never get enough vitamins because I tend to be deficient.

This breakfast delight comes in a 7 oz box. There are approximately 8 French toast sticks inside each package, which retails for just $1 at Dollar Tree stores nationwide.

One serving is considered to be 5 French toast sticks. That equates to 320 calories, almost half of which are fat-related.

Unfortunately, there is 16 g of fat in each serving. Of that amount, 2.5g comes from saturated fat. Luckily Murry's Original French Toast Sticks contain no trans fat.

They do; however, contain 42 g of carbohydrate, 11 g of sugar, 340 mg of salt and 20 mg of cholesterol. On the positive side, they also offer 5 g of protein and 2 g of fiber. They also provide 10% of the daily-recommended amount of iron and 4% of the needed calcium.

Ingredients include bleached wheat flour, cinnamon, corn syrup solids, cottonseed oil, egg, folic acid, guar gum, malted barley flour, high fructose corn syrup, mononitrate, niacin, nonfat milk, paprika, reduced iron, riboflavin, salt, soybean oil, soy flour, spices, sugar, thiamine, turmeric, water, white flour, yeast and yellow corn flour. They also contain ammonium sulfate, artificial flavor, ascorbic acid, azodicarbonomide, calcium peroxide, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate, datem, dextrose, flavorings, modified food starch, mono and digycerides, monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium aluminum phosphate, phosphoric acid, polysorbate 60, potassium bromate, potassium iolate, propionic acid, sodium soy lecithin, stearoyl lactylate and wheat gluten.

Murry's Original French Toast Sticks can be cooked in a toaster oven, a regular oven, on the griddle or in the microwave. I have even cooked mine on top of the stove.

If you choose to bake them, begin by preheating the oven (or toaster oven) to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the French toast sticks on a cookie sheet or other flat baking surface. Pop them in the oven and bake for about 3 minutes on each side. Do not bake longer than 5 minutes on each side or they may become to hard to eat.

For cooking on the griddle, preheat the griddle surface to 325 degree Fahrenheit. Spray the surface with a non-stick cooking spray. Place the sticks on the griddle and heat through. This will take about 4 minutes on each side. You can use this same method to cook these French toast sticks in a skillet.

To microwave, place the sticks on a plate that is microwave safe. Set the timer on high. Microwave for one minute, turning the sticks about halfway through the process. You can microwave another 30 seconds if desired. Let sit for about 30 seconds before eating.

Serve Murry's Original French Toast Sticks alone, with butter, honey, syrup, jelly, powdered sugar or whipped cream. For a large breakfast, combine the sticks with eggs or meat.

Here is my summary review:

Taste: 4 stars. Murry's Original French Toast Sticks are just as good as any others I have found on the market. Of course, they aren't as good as homemade.

Appearance: 4 stars. These sticks look as delicious as they are.

Freshness: 4 stars. If you keep Murry's Original French Toast Sticks frozen until you are ready to use them, they will stay fresh for quite some time. Once the inner package has been opened; however, they quickly become subject to freezer burn.

Nutrition: 2 stars. The truth is French toast isn't the most nutritional breakfast option. Bread is high in carbohydrates. French toast is also high in sugar and fat. Outside of that, Murry's Original French Toast Sticks don't offer a lot of nutritional value.

Green value: 5 stars. The packaging is recyclable and biodegradable.

Packaging: 5 stars. Murry's Original French Toast Sticks come in black, yellow and red box with bright blue lettering. A picture of the sticks is printed right on the box, making it look appetizing and eye appealing. It is beautiful packaging but nothing too fancy.

Ease of storage: 5 stars. The package measures just less than 7" in height and just over 6" in width and 1.75" in depth. The box fits well into a freezer. Inside the box, the sticks are also sealed in a wax paper bag, which is slightly smaller. It is even easier to store.

Availability: 3 stars. The only place I have found these sticks so far is Dollar Tree. Luckily, Dollar Tree stores are available throughout the U.S.

Price: 5 stars. The $1 price tag is a major selling point.

Final rating: 4.1 stars. These French toast sticks are delish!

RATING SCALE:

5 stars = outstanding

4 stars = good

3 stars = average

2 stars = below average

1 star = poor

Sounds good. The only time I eat French Toast is when I go to Golden Corral, and then I have it with their yummy cinammon apple :)
