Muscle Cars Are America's Way of Saying High Performance

David C. Atkin
Over the years a lot of people have tried to get the muscle cars off of the roads, but it never seems to work, it stands to reason that they are a part of American automotive history, we all know that they have done a lot for the automotive industry over the years.

Over the years a lot of people have tried to get the muscle cars off of the roads, but it never seems to work, it stands to reason that they are a part of American automotive history, we all know that they have done a lot for the automotive industry over the years.

Way back in 1963 when they were first created by Pontiac Motor Company and John Delorian, a car known as the GTO would change the face of the automotive industry, and create a whole new way of looking at things for the automotive industry.

John Delorian went to Pontiac with the idea to create the first muscle car, and they promptly told him that it would never work, but gave him enough rope to hang himself, little did Pontiac know how wrong they were, it was destined to create an entire automotive culture.

It would create competition between the big three motor companies, and make cars safer to drive, it would make the big three develop new and better ways to stop their cars, it created competition in a way that the big three had never seen before.

The car companies would put their new cars to the test on the drag strip, the SCCA race track, and a few other places, in 1964 Ford released the mustang to compete in the muscle car wars, and quickly realized that it needed a few upgrades to compete.

In 1965 Ford added a V8 engine option to the mustang's order list, and people would go nuts buying these cars, the Ford mustang was destined to sell more car then any other muscle car, there were a lot of options coming out to make these cars faster, and more powerful.

The mustang had actually been released to do battle with the Chevrolet corvette, and quickly Ford realized that the mustang was not in the same class as the corvette, seeing this Ford would add a big block option to their option list.

In 1967 Chevrolet would produce their answer to the Ford mustang, in a car simply known as the camaro, after seeing the sales numbers of the mustang Chevrolet knew that they had to do something to keep up with the Joneses.

This would be the year that the pony wars came about, a pony car was a smaller version of the muscle car, although it's still known as a muscle car by most people, camaro's and mustangs were pony cars, and they have had a wonderful life history with the American motor companies.

To this very day the camaro, and the mustang are still a staple of the Ford, and Chevrolet motor companies, when Chevrolet released the brand new 2010 camaro, it was a huge event, Chevrolet had speculated that the camaro would save their company from certain doom.

In America we spell the word performance with two words, and those words are muscle car, for the nay Sayers who don't understand that the motor companies could not make advances in the industry without putting cars on the race track, you still have some learning to do.

By putting these cars on the race track the car companies invent better braking systems, better steering systems, and better handling cars, and all of these things create a safer car for you to drive, so next you want to whine that they build a mustang, or a camaro just look at how safe you car is.

It might change your mind completely, I will guarantee you that if the motor companies didn't put cars on the race track, you car would not be even close to as safe as it is now, racing is not just a bunch of guys that like to drive fast, it serves a purpose.

Muscle cars came from the idea of competition, and competition is what makes companies build a better product, so next time your ready to whine about Chevrolet building a camaro, or Ford building a mustang, just think about all the things that those cars have done for you.
