Opening for them was indie rock band, Metric. As a casual fan of the band, I was extremely disappointed in the performance. Frontwoman, Emily Haines, has no strange presence and the short set somehow dragged on until she abruptly walked offstage leaving concertgoers wondering if their set had just ended.
Though Metric did not make a good impression, their performance was soon quickly forgotten. As soon as the lights went down there was thunderous applause that lasted for the entirety of the somewhat long video intro until the curtains fell away to reveal the band perched atop three individual towers, roaring into "Uprising."
As the show thundered on, there was never a lack of energy and to the best of my recollection, it's the only concert I've ever been to where I had assigned seats and still stood up the entire time. It's certainly not hard for Muse to get the crowd up on their feet. On the contrary, Matthew Bellamy's voice alone could probably raise the dead with no instrumental backing at all.
Just as spectacular as the performance was the extravagant light show that accompanied the music. The laser beams crisscrossing the arena were a perfect touch to a mesmerizing show that can be described as nothing short of epic.
They performed all the crowd-pleasing hits like "Supermassive Black Hole" and "Time is Running Out." I was particularly delighted when Bellamy took to the piano and belted out their cover of "Feeling Good." And just as strong as they opened, they went out with a rousing rendition of "Knights of Cydonia" at the end of the encore, which had the entire audience singing along. They play the kind of music that would suitably soundtrack the overthrowing of a small country. So it's not surprising that the amount of fist pumping in that room even the Jersey shore has never seen.
A Muse concert is a must see event for any and all fans of music. They are so much more powerful live than you would anticipate that I could safely guarantee that it's easily one of the best shows you'll ever see.
