At first you may wonder what exactly a museum of anthropology is about if you never took a college course on the subject. In North and South America archaeology is studied by studying anthropology. A anthropology museum often shows archaeological discoveries though they also show things relating to a particular people or culture. Anthropology museums are not as common as other kinds of museums like art or science museums. Often these museums focus on one local people or point of interest.
The Museo Nacional de Antropología main focus is on the archaeology of Mexico. If this does not sound to fun think of it as a museum Indiana Jones would be working to get items for because that is what he did. The museum focuses on Pre-Colombian cultures. Those are cultures from before the Europeans arrival to the New World. These cultures include the Aztec, Olmec, and others.
The Museo Nacional de Antropología is the best of its kind in the world. Not only is it one of the best for this kind of archaeology but it is one of the finest anthropology museums in the world. Most likely you have seen some of the items they have at the Museo Nacional de Antropología in your text books in school at one time.
The Stone of the Sun is one of the most famous single artifacts in the museums collection and one you are likely to have seen. The Museo Nacional de Antropología is very large and has lots of pieces. The Museo Nacional de Antropología also features special exhibitions of other cultures on a rotating basis.
If you are in Mexico City this is one of the places you have to go. While it may not be as exciting to see some of the artifacts in a museum as it would be to see them outside in a jungle it is still amazing. While you may not think kids would be interested in something like anthropology kids will actually really enjoy the Museo Nacional de Antropología. A trip to Museo Nacional de Antropología is almost worth the trip to Mexico on its own.
