Museum En Masque

A Reflection on Art

David A. Reinstein, LCSW

Showing while concealing,
Cold and numb
Devoid of feelings
The gallery dances
By standing still
And glowing
In a carefully sculpted
Pretense
Of movement.

The leftovers
From once magnificent
Moments
Of inspiration
Are placed
Suggestively
And geometrically
Along the wide corridors
And walls of
Unnecessarily vacuous
Chambers
Where the light would be
Natural
If there were
Any windows.

Incandescence mimics
Sunlight
Ineffectively.

Strolling by
Decorated walls
While glancing
As if to study
And appreciate
Someone else's
Creativity;
Stained canvas
Dressed in bright
Acrylics
Deceiving both sight
And touch,

And good docents
Never tell
The truth.

Into the eye
Of the beholder come
Perceptions
Formed while waiting to get in;
Seen is the self
In mirrors
And on canvas;
Art is less
For its own sake
Than it is
For one's own sake.

So much to meditate upon here; I can barely scratch the surface. Brilliant, as usual! Thanks!

Sometimes I wonder who is the most pretentious: the artist, the critic, the browser, or the collector. Take a look at most of the art on display in a modern art museum. A bored guide making more than his gaggle of art student listeners might stop at an exhibit: "This piece was done by M. Artiste at the age of 33, the same age as Jesus when he was hanged rather inartistically for sedition. The medium: flower petals, chrome, and bat guano. It is a testament to the artist's native country, his dislike for flowers, mankind's aversion to bats, and the modern need to pretty things up that have their place as crap, not to mention give them meaning."

Love the closing line, the docents line and also this phrasing- Incandescence mimics
    Sunlight Ineffectively.

I like that line, "good docents never tell the truth."

&). Art, like poetry, is interpreted by ones own experiences.
