Expand On Current Studies
Visits to museum exhibits related to what your child is learning in school are excellent for expanding and re-enforcing lessons. There are also hands-on exhibits and even classes in many museums that can prove very beneficial to study. Sometimes there are small fees for these classes, but members (those with a yearly pass) usually receive an even greater deal on these. Even when there isn't a hands-on exhibit or event, children can still gain knowledge through experience by viewing the still exhibits and reading the information provided. If your children are willing, I highly recommend having them take notes in a notebook and also sketch in a drawing pad. This also solidifies the lesson.
New Discoveries
There is always something new to learn at a museum. Even if you go many times, it is always possible to learn something new. Exhibits change frequently at many museums. Also, many of today's museums are very large and one cannot process all of the information in just one visit. New interests may even be gained.
Invoke Exploration
Visiting museums can help create the desire to explore. Not only are there so many different things to discover in a museum, but many museums are finding creative ways to do it, such as creating tunnels and life-like exhibits a child can participate in, such as dinosaur digs. Children will find this so fun, they will often start exploring in other areas of life, outside of the museum.
Expand On Personal Interests
If there is something your child is particularly interested in, you may just find it at a museum. If so, don't hesitate to take that opportunity to immerse your child in the knowledge something he or she loves.
It's Fun!
Museums have come a long way over the years. Many people used to refer to them as boring. However, now more and more people are discovering that museums can be really fun. It's important that some trips to the museum are solely for fun and don't have a goal in mind. This keeps the child interested and doesn't make it seem so much like a part of school or learning. Children generally are more receptive to learning when they can have fun; not to mention the fact that these are children and they just plain need to have fun.

Hello. Mommy2Lots is right on. She says I should make a reference to my own "Mid-Michigan Joins Children's Museum Trend." We were being sort of simultaneous on our topics. That's not the right word. Can't think of it......OK, now got it. We had "synergy." Thanks Mommy2Lots.
As always, great perspectives for hands on learning!
I loved going to museums as a child (and still do). I even became a tour guide at one when I was in college.
Fantastic article! The Children's Please Touch Museum in Philly is wonderful!!
I have been wanting to visit a few museums with the children. This article reminded me that I should be making the time to do it! Especially the Benjamin Franklin Institute in Philly. Love that place! Good read.
