Museums in Cannes and the Surrounding Areas

If you mention the word Cannes in a crowd of people, the first thing that will probably come to their mind is the annual Film Festival that draws people around the world to the city. You may be surprised to learn that Cannes has much more to offer. The area is home to a number of museums, featuring everything from archeology to perfumery. Whether you're attending the Cannes Film Festival or just planning a vacation to the region, be sure to check a few or all of the museums.

Musee de la Castre

Founded in 1877, this museum has resided in the Chateau de la Castre since 1952. Here you will find paintings, sculptures and decorative arts. Be sure to check out the ethnography section which includes Peruvian and Mayan pottery, as well as relics from Mediterranean civilizations.

Musee de la Mer

This museum features artifacts found through underwater archeology including relics going back to Roman times. Fans of Alexander Dumas's "Man in the Mask" will also enjoy seeing where the Man in the Mask was jailed.

Musee International de la Parfumerie

Located in nearby Grasse, the birthplace of traditional perfumery, the Musee International de la Parfumerie is sure to delight scent lovers. Take a tour to learn how perfume is made from creation to bottling. Be sure to take time to view the collection of antique and contemporary items associated with perfume and makeup, which include a travel case that belonged to Marie Antoinette.

Musee d'Art et d'Historie de Province

Local history buffs will enjoy the Musee d'Art et d'Historie de Province found in nearby Grasse. Housed in a beautiful eighteenth century mansion, the museum features artifacts from prehistoric to modern times. If you have the time, take a stroll through the stunning French-designed gardens.

Musee de la Photographie

Located in nearby Mougins, the Musee de la Photographie features the art of photograph. Here you will find photographs by legendary photographers such as Robert Doisneau. Be sure to check out the permanent exhibit of photographs of well-known artist Pablo Picasso.

Musee de la Marine

This museum features a series of model ships. The museum is a memorial to Admiral Francois-Joseph Paul, Comte de Grasse, who enabled the United States to win the Revolutionary war by aiding Americans in capturing General Cornwallis' troops.

Musee et Domaine Renoir

Fans of the great artist Domaine Renoir will enjoy this museum located in Cagnes-sur-Mer. Visitors can tour the home, which features the original furnishings and art studio. A series of sculptures, paintings and portraits are also on display.

Villa Musee Jean-Honore Fragonard

Dating back to the 1700s, this beautiful home in Grasse showcase Jean-Honore Fragonard's art collection. Be sure to check out the trompe-l'oeil (optical illusion art) on the staircase. The gardens are also a must-see at this museum.
