Museums in the Tampa, Florida, Area

Tampa, Florida, is mostly known for its great weather, beaches, and Busch Gardens, but did you know that Tampa is also home to some great museums? You can choose from over 10 museums in the Tampa area. Here is a short list of my favorites. Each time I visit I try to include a stop at one of these fine museums.

The Museum of Science and Industry, or MOSI for short, is one that you will want to visit again and again. It is located on E. Fowler Avenue near USF. This museum offers many hands on exhibits that people of all ages love. They even have an IMAX theatre. New shows and exhibits are rotated frequently so be sure to check back every few weeks. They have a gift shop and book shop that are second to none.

The Dali Museum is located just outside of Tampa in St. Petersburg, Florida. Here you will find the largest collection of art by Dali. Be sure to stop in their gift shop to pick up a reprint while you are there, they have many to choose from.

The Polk Museum of Art is located on E. Palmetto Street in Lakeland, Florida. This museum has everything from artifacts from 600 AD to paintings and drawings from all eras. They run specials and tours all year long.

The Tampa Museum is located in downtown Tampa close to Curtis Hixon Hall, on Doyle Carleton Drive. This museum has 6 galleries that showcase collections of art, pottery, and sculptures. Guided tours are an option to consider or you can meander through the exhibits by yourself at your own pace. It is located close to Riverwalk so you can easily spend the day enjoying the museum and a walk along the Hillsborough River.

The Henry B. Plant Museum is also located in downtown Tampa on W. Kennedy Blvd. This museum is home to some of the most exotic collections around. You can find Oriental and European artwork that includes pottery, earthenware, and more.

For a full listing of museums and exhibits in the Tampa area be sure to check with the Tampa Chamber of Commerce and Tampa Visitor's Bureau. Both offer a great array of information for visitors and residents alike.
