Music of the 90s: SPICE GIRLS: SPICE

If the Beatles Had Been Female....

Paisley Raven
There are times in my childhood when I don't clearly recall anything except the music I listened to at the time. I was entering high school in the 90s, and al of my most vivid, most thrilling moments and memories are wrapped up in music somehow.

Even as I left high school to step into the role of wife and mother, the radio always aw more play than the TV.

The hardest thing for me to do is decide who is my favorite group or band or song or album from the 90s. I've spent weeks thinking about this; examining and considering my wide range of interests for what would be a defining choice. It finally struck me just a few hours ago.

This was a time in my life when I was growing out of girlhood into womanhood. I was becoming independent, confident and gaining some experience in the ways of the world. What better choice of music for this time of my life than the Spice Girls, the head proponents of Girl Power?

From the 1996 debut single Wannabe to their movie 1997 Spice World, the Spice Girls stormed the global 'tween pop audience and continue to hold a spot as icons of the final decade of the 20th century. In their home country, they inspired comparisons to the Beatles, so fanatical was the following.

The Spice Girls' music was light-hearted, fun, and cheeky. Their different styles inspired girls to break out and be themselves, to try new things and expand their horizons. I always admired the group for their underlying message of feminine power, without going to the extreme of excluding the advantages of having men around!

At 35, I've come quite a long way from the first time I saw AC. I'm still writing, but more fiction than anything. Always learning & looking! View profile

Don¡¯t conceal from me your envy of those superstars carrying luxurious designer handbags. You may admire the famous fashion houses for the fantastic designs, but meanwhile hate them for the sky-high prices. And let¡¯s take away the latter hatred and buy some replica handbags!
