Music Album Review: Anjulie- "Anjulie"

Wes Laurie
I landed on listening to the digital version of Anjulie's self-titled "Anjulie" album by random clicking and a link to the shockingly still alive Myspace. I listened to Anjulie for the first time and there were some elements in the mix that I felt had potential to really break out, though they never came altogether and did for me. However, it is still a strong, listenable pop and R & B album with some overproduced old school flavor.

The best song on "Anjulie" was by far "Love Songs," because I just really enjoyed the lyrics and the theme of it.

"Boom": Boom is a Boom-shalaka chorus on a oldie doo-wop vocal style and beat that has been modernized with a slick produced sound. There is a hint of Nelly Furtado sound to the singer's tone.

"Rain": Pop R & B ballad that is smooth and lazy(good/bad) and ready for an appearance on the soundtrack of a romantic comedy; during one of the dramatic moments. Song is about never falling love again with someone who wasn't the right one.

"Some Dumb Girl": Porno music goes R & B pop! Shaft would be proud. Cute, but not a leg that is going to hold up the table for me.

"Addicted2Me": Could use more Umph, the faded back shouting through a plastic cone vocal added in is not enough to go with the bass thump that wants to kill the clap, but must behave itself. Actually, the chorus done like that reminded me of old Natalie Imbruglia. When she breaks it down into a high pitched notes it is almost like fingernails across a chalk board.

"Crazy That Way Intro": Zip zip thirty seconds or so of violin.

"Crazy That Way": Decent music and decent vocals, the lyrics are dull and repetitive. It falls short, but I think she has a pretty song in her somewhere.

"Fatal Attraction": The artist Pink should write a good song for this girl, for some reason this song seems to be a plea for that in my opinion. Sorry if that is a weird opinion.

"The Heat": It is nod your head slightly along to catchy for the first listen. It would not be magical to hear it on repeat. She's swinging and making contact, due for a hit with me.

"Colombia": A bored girl singing a boring soap opera of a song that turns into a travel commercial jingle.

"Same Damn Thing": This song has the same vibe as "Colombia."

"I Want The World To Know": Another romantic comedy soundtrack track, this one can go on during a happier montage. Ah-hoo! I can dislike it, but find it likeable.

"Love Songs": Romantically beautiful, a real walk through the park song, and I love the lyrics. The music itself is a bit uninteresting though. This song is a nice way to be, falling for and enjoying the cheesy things in life?

"Day Will Soon Come": Strong, but not wow. It's more than filler and single worthy if you are digging her early Nelly Furtado vibe.

"When It's Love": Disappointing, the girl with the guitar ballad, little violin, didn't do it for me, even when the other strings chimed in and the dramatics were scaled up.
